Street parties

There's still time to organise a Royal Wedding street party - council engineers need a month's notice to organise road closures. We won't be charging for this, and we've also put together an easy-read guide to help organisers. Go to http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/streetparties.

I have been organising a Street Party and residents are delighted that this is happening and the Council have been very very helpful. There is no charge for the actual street closure but you do need to pay for the barriers and road closure sign. This is a cost of £30 in total and I wonder if anyone has held a street party and how they have gone about funding the above and also all the kit required, e.g bunting, table cloths, plastic cutlery, plates etc? There must be an easy way round this?

Julie

So it is not free to close your road then?? Nevermind! We had to pay last year, and each household in the road donated £5 and this was used for road closure and any extras needed. Tables and chairs were supplied by who ever had them. And we were lucky to have someone living in the road who supplied bunting and street decorations. We set up just in the centre section. Everyone bought a food donation and placed it on a central buffet table. And supplied their own drinks. Plus you will be surprised what people have hanging around spare - plates, cutlery etc. You just have to ask - put a note through everyone's door listing what is required, what you need help with, and what the actual plan/schedule is, time etc. This year I think our plans are that individuals pay a set amount and we get a caterer to do the food - who also happens to be a neighbour! (Yet to be decided). Good luck.

Every year in Battersea in the 'Triangle of Kerrison road, Poinz Road anmd Shellwood road, they have a street party and it is very good. However it is organised by a team of neighbours who have been organising it for years. You will need to canvase your neighbours and make sure that you have plenty of support. A simple raffle or tombola is a good way of raising money. If you are lucky enough to have front gardens, try and organise a best front garden party. I only know this through attending the Batteresea street party for the last 10 years. As to price I would not know how much to close your roads down for the day.

Leniedc

For Royal Wedding the borough of Wandsworth won't charge anything to close the roads.

Why not celebrate with parties in your local pub!

Clare Groves

Hi Leniedc, the information I got when the ok came through from the council was that the signs still need to be hired, is this right or have you heard otherwise? I have been told that street closure is free, as some councils do charge but signs are not??

Leniedc

Hi Clare, street signs still have to be hired indeed, for £30 one should get "road closed" signs and cones (I hope)

Battersea High street are having a party and it really is a great street to have one as the road is closed anyway virtually ! its free except for the food and booze ! I believe they are also having a screen up to watch it happening ?!

Emily

Lynda, how has/is this being communicated to the locals? I live on Battersea High St, and this is the first I've heard of it!

Vivian Binactive

I was there (Battersea High Street) yesterday .. no signs or anything. But they usually put on a good day.

Paper plates etc., if you know someone who has a cash and carry card / CostCo card, you can get sufficient for a few hundred people for not a lot of money.

Wandsworth Council

You can buy signs from us at cost price. Alternatively, they can be hired from a tool hire shop.

Gilly Belfrage

Why not to go to Hyde Park they are having an event I believe. Less hassle.

Clare Groves

Less hassle but less fun and getting to know the residents of your Street is a nice idea I think, don't you?

I spoke to the Battersea High Street organiser on Tuesday evening. Could be a big bash if they can find the money/sponsorship for entertainment. BBC Radio London are planning to cover it as are ABC TV from the US.

The organiser, Steve from Galapagos foods, is currently tearing his hair out!

Good luck to him but, I do hope this doesn't detract from the genuine street-based parties though.

Best - Ian

Street party sound quality!

Vivian Binactive

Listening to Radio London yesterday, they were advertising that they will be broadcasting from Battersea High Street on the day of the Royal Wedding.

ADVERTISE people. I overlook the High Street and knew nothing about it until it was discussed on here - then confirmed by Paul ross!

Notices in windows - lamp-posts etc., would all let the local people know about it - a freebie in the local Guardian to alert everyone .. anything - otherwise the day will go the way of a damp squib.

Lynda W

HI

Well i was told by Steve who owns the Galapagos and i live right behind the high street and cant see anything anywhere either ! They need to get out there now not the week before ! Its a great opportunity to show the Wandsworth lot (us) the Battersea high street is fun. Gosh you live on that street and cant see anything that's sad really ! missing an opportunity !Ill pop round to chase them up !

Hello, just to reassure you that the publicity for the Battersea High Street Party on 29th April is about to start...

I'll get full details out within the next day or two, but do please save the date - it's going to be a really fantastic event!

Nina

Nina @ Streetlife

Wandsworth Council: might you also be kind enough to waive the fee for road closures for the 2011 Big Lunch date on Sunday 5th June please?

I know a lot of people who've been thinking about organising street parties with their neighbours are struggling to get a group together on 29th because so many people have things planned for the bank holidays.

Please let us know how long in advance of this date you'd need applications so we can start spreading the word!

Hi Nina,

There is definatly going to be a party in Battersea High Street and it is in the making, so don't worry flyers will be put everywhere( we still have 1 month before the party). There was a first meeting on the 22nd and there is going to be a second meeting next tuesday (the 5th of April). I believe it is going to be around the same time than last one 5pm. Anybody can have a stand on the day and it will cost you £50 to register for one. BBC will be filming the event the entire day (from setup at 6 AM, to the wedding viewing on a big screen installed in the street, and then they will interview stand holders. I will have a stand with the Wow mums and KLS where we will fundraise money for our charity. So far we will provide cakes, face painting, a tombola and some fishing games for the children. If anyone wants to know more about the street party, come to tuesday meeting at the bellevue pub in battersea (where is the saturday market, opposite galapagos). We though also that it will be nice if people could wear their national costume on the dayto add an international flavour which will reflect our community

Lynda W

I went to see the companies on Battersea High street yesterday and sure enough this is a BIG day for the street they hope to have 1000's of people there with food and drinks for everyone and of course the big screen to see the wedding ( which is why its all happening ) I received a letter from the council last night when i got home so maybe you have now too? See you all there !All the advertising material etc will be going up and out this week i understand

Wandsworth Council

Hi Nina,

We need about a month's notice to organise road closures, so there's still plenty of time to arrange a Big Lunch Street Party.

Although we've made an exception for the royal wedding (and next year's Jubilee), we really do need to recover some of our costs for other street party road closures. We have made it much cheaper this year, though - just £50 - so that it's more affordable.

Nina @ Streetlife

Great news, thanks Wandsworth Council!

Watch this space for details of the Battersea High Street Royal Wedding Celebration - out next week.

How about having a Alternative party with no mention of the Wedding. I for one am already fed up with all the nonsense. As a Republican I need a place to escape from it all. Any ideas maybe a picnic or party? I am not being disrespectful just need to escape with fellow Republicans.
