Would anyone be interested in setting a book club up in the clapham junction area? If so I might have a word with Waterstones or the library and see if something could be organised with them.
Hi again. Have ordered my book as no libraries in Wandsworth had a copy! Hope to get it by Fri so will read asap. Please meet as you planned in Costa. I was making a suggestion for future dates that we could maybe try if anyone else liked the idea. Look forward to meeting you all.
Amazingly enough couldn't find it anywhere in central london - even Waterstone advised to get it through Amazon, which I did. Ordered it last wednesday and it arrived on saturday morning and the cost was under £5!
HI can somebody fill me in on the latest book club meet time and venue? Having difficulty deciphering the messages and as I would need to get a babysitter don't want to get it wrong. I gather it's the Night Watch is that correct? Have you thought about how much you would read and if there is anything in particular to focus on?
Re:post - hopefully people will manage to read the whole book, we'll home in on focus when we all meet. Please see my previous post. Location is same Costa in Clapham Junction Station.
Jessica suggested a book by Sarah Waters, The Night Watch (2006). A novel based on Victorian society:
"Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked out streets, illicit liaisons, sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch is the work of a truly brilliant and compelling storyteller. This is the story of four Londoners - three women and a young man with a past, drawn with absolute truth and intimacy. Kay, who drove an ambulance during the war and lived life at full throttle, now dresses in mannish clothes and wanders the streets with a restless hunger, searching ...Helen, clever, sweet, much-loved, harbours a painful secret ...Viv, glamour girl, is stubbornly, even foolishly loyal, to her soldier lover ...Duncan, an apparent innocent, has had his own demons to fight during the war. Their lives, and their secrets connect in sometimes startling ways. War leads to strange alliances ...Tender, tragic and beautifully poignant, set against the backdrop of feats of heroism both epic and ordinary, here is a novel of relationships that offers up subtle surprises and twists. The Night Watch is thrilling. A towering achievement."
Her most famous novel is Fingersmith which was translated onto screen in the BBC drama Tipping the Velvet. So shall we start with that and aim to meet up on Monday 12th December which should give enough time to read it and come up with suggestions for the following book to read over Christmas?
I'm another person interested in attending the book club, so I look forward to meeting you on the 12th December. There was a very good adaption of this book on TV earlier this year.
Hi All. Firstly a big thank-you to Ellie for organising the first meeting and taking time to make up a list of discussion points relating to The Night Watch. It was interesting to hear everyone else's 'take' on the book. Secondly, it was decided that the next meeting would be on Monday 23rd January 2012 at the Battersea Music and Mess Hall in Lavender Gardens. For those who do not know exactly where it is it is at the Lavender Hill end of Lavender Gardens opposite the Magistrates Court. If you turn into Lavender Gardens from Lavender Hill it is just a few yards up on the right hand side. We decided that the book for the next meeting would be The Meeting Point by Lucy Caldwell. I'll just quote the last paragraph of the description 'The Meeting Point is a novel about idealism and innocence, about the unexpected turns life can take and the dangers and chances that await us'. Looking forward to seeing you all in January and, in the meantime, I wish you all a Happy Xmas and New Year. Joan
