Blood oranges - anyone interested in sharing a case?

i love blood oranges, and the ones sold in the supermarkets aren't really a patch on proper blood oranges.  if i go to New Covent Garden at hideous o'clock and buy a crate, is anyone prepared to share them with me?  despite my craze for them, even i can't eat a crate of blood oranges before they go off.

Well you obviously look much better than I would at that time of the day!

I'm on my way - please don't give mine to anyone else! See you in a tick.

100 oranges collected/delivered for 10 different people - 40 assigned - got 30 oranges left without an owner.  this could be Lynda's chance to use them for dying, tho' several of you have said you'll take more.  first choice will be anyone new who gets in touch, otherwise, will split them amongst those who wanted them to juice.  alternatively i'll do nothing but eat oranges between now and Monday.

emmsar

Just got back after collecting my oranges and a nice cuppa that restored me after the sudden shower.

Met mungomuffit who'd come to collect too. Nice meeting the people we have shared posts/conversations and comments with. I think Streetlife has certainly given an impetus to community interaction. Lucy was talking of other delicious seasonal produce that is available from time to time, but obviously she doesn't have the time or place to stock and distribute it. I had suggested we get Earlsfield deli involved since they were talking about getting in fresh produce. Perhaps they could be persuaded to act as collection/distribution point?

Certainly getting fresh, delicious produce otherwise not available and sharing it among those interested would be great.

Lucy will be uploading the pictures of the staggering orange success! 3 cheers for Lucy!!

Hi Mungomuffit and Emmsar

No I do not look good first thing!! Takes 2hrs to put the slap on! but I would like to have a look.. Lucy thought it was good fun so I could sacrifice sleep for food!

I think that is a really  good idea if John at the Deli would be interested ..They are only down the road..

Really well done Streetlife and Lucy!

Cheers

Lovely to meet you today Emmsar and Lucy. My children have just polished off some of my booty and given them a major thumbs up. My son is especially taken by the thought that he has eaten an orange that has ACTUAL blood in it! The wrappers went down a treat too.

Good idea Emmsar about Earlsfield deli, as I'm sure Lucy doesn't need dozens of Streetlifers knocking on her door every weekend.

Not promising anything (ref prev comments re being lethal in am) ... but Lucy has inspired me. I've always been interested in seeing the flower market, so perhaps I could buy bulk of something one day and we could split it up?

Pinklady

Very enterprising. Well done. 5 stars for community spirit.

Next year I will post same offer for Seville oranges for marmalade. Made mine for this year a couple of weeks ago.

Lynda H

Hi..any oranges or skins welcome..just let me know where and when ...lyndax

Shahid Rafiq

Mumgomuffit, i was not talking about the cost it was more the principle. If your not sure what i mean then please let me know and i will explain. I know the cost will be mimimial when you take into consideration how many oranges were bought by Lucy.

Anyway Lucy i am offering to drive you next time to pick up the oranages or i will go and pick them up for you. I start working around 6am most morning so getting up an hour earlier is no problem.

"If your (sic) not sure what i mean then please let me know and i will explain."

Wow. Patronising???

Shahid Rafiq

Sorry.. i wasnt meaning to be patronising... i am not trying to offend or anything like that... I apologise if my comment came across patronising.

emmsar

Just a line to say that the oranges eaten as such or juiced are delicious, they taste so much fresher.

Shahid, I have already offered to go with Lucy so that holds, what fun if a caravan sets off from Tooting and buys up crates to share - what a lark!!

Lucy S

i like Emmasar's idea about the Earlsfield deli.  when i've written up this whole adventure for Streetlife to use as a case study, i'll go talk to the Earlsfield Deli team and see what they think about getting crates of truly seasonal produce.  am definitely up for another run on New Covent Garden, either to the flower market or to do another blood orange run before the end of the blood orange season in March.  have asparagus in mind also, and strawberries that aren't Elsanta.  Shahid, thanks for the offer, i don't need driving - i've got an enormous old car that can easily take 4 people AND fill a boot with flowers, fruit, veg, whatever we desire to buy in ridiculous quantities.  be happy to share in a flower run.

Shahid Rafiq

Emmsar & Lucy thats no problem... Lucy if you don't feel like doing the bloody orange run at a later date then let me know.. i will do one for you, even if its next season.

mungomuffit

Apology accepted Shahid ;). Actually, I don't have a problem with the principle or the cost. Seems perfectly reasonable to me, but each to their own I suppose and long live Streetlife for that!

I had a blood orange this morning. Mine looked like a normal orange inside (boo - I wanted it to be dark red like the ones my children had yesterday!) but it was incredibly sweet and the flesh was so soft, unlike those chewy ones you often get at the supermarket. A revelation!

Shahid Rafiq

Thanks mungomuffit...

lucy i will buy 10 oranges if you still have them... I know a couple of weegins who would love them..

Nicola Crow

Thanks so much to Lucy for delivering the oranges on Saturday morning - they are quite delicious and I would happily order some more as we've been through half of them already! They're so succulent and really quite addictive...!

Count me in for any other goodies you're thinking of getting - flowers, strawberries, asparagus or even more oranges - a billion times better quality than in the supermarket and at a bargain price too.

Lucy, thanks for starting this thread and putting so much effort in the oranges, we're very lucky to have people like you in this community. Look forward to seeing you again, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Thanks. Nic

Lucy S

Nic, thank you so much. glad the oranges have been a hit.  i loved Mungomuffit's son's comment, that he's delighted to eat an orange with 'actual blood' ... i think we can guess his age.  am planning another orange run early next week, so anyone who wants some more, please let me know how many and i'll work out what day i'm going & let you know.  the Blood Orange Project allowed me to do something i've long wanted to do AND to eat rather a lot of blood oranges & meet lots of wonderful Streetlifers, its been fascinating.  will post some photos of most of the Blood Orange gang later.

Hi Lucy, are there any left? Sounds great and you should definitely be reimbursed for your parking and mileage, it's amazingly generous of you to get up at 5am and hand deliver so much of the batch too, you must be exhausted!! If you have any left please let me know, or if you go again please count me in for 10, I need my vitamin B at the moment :) Thanks

Lucy S

welcome to the Blood Orange Gang - will put you in for 10 in the next run, either this Friday or early next week.

CC

Hi Lucy - thanks for the delicious oranges last week - they were fab and are all gone!  Yes please to any more if you are really offering another run. I'd happily take 20, if they were available.  Let me know if you need someone to accompany you if you need early morning support!  Clarinda

Kate B

I am happy to be included in the next batch please.

Yvonne D

I wish I'd come across this thread earlier - I'd love some blood oranges if you've got any spare on your next expedition - would be able to collect no problem, just let me know!

Lucy S

Yvonne, you can certainly be included in the next run - late this week or early next.  will be asking everyone to declare how many they want shortly.

Denise W

Having scoffed many already - I have just Juiced a batch!! Absolutely lovely and great colour too! I will certainly take another 20 on the next run! Thanks again Lucy!

Cheers

Denise
