Rubbish collections - problems with change of day
The rubbish collection days changed this week in Tooting - from Monday to Friday for our house. Yet the streets are full of rubbish bags left out yesterday, the contents now being spilled across the roads by foxes. Could I ask that:
- Anyone with bags in the street take them in
- People ask their neighbours to take them in
I know Wandsworth Council monitor these forums so it would be good if they could also help do something to sort this problem out. As the number of bags in the streets show, their communication about this was clearly not sufficient and it is completely unacceptable to leave the streets full of rubbish for a week.

Calm down Colin - if you read previous posts I think they say that your rubbish will be collected tomorrow.
I'd really like to see the offers for all of the companies tendering for the Wandsworth account.
Mungomuffit, I feel justified in being cross about the unacceptable level of communication regarding the changes of both contracts and collection days there is rubbish, mess and ripped bags all over my street .Due to poor communication from either SERCO or Wandsworth Council.
I have had experience of SERCO's services in my professional role. Let me tell you they did not keep the contract for long. They are cheap and promise the earth. Due to low wages poor terms and conditions and high staff turnover of their manual workers they deliver very little. I feel we were not informed about SERCO getting the contract because of their poor reputation. Like Wandsworth Council really cheap council tax but poor services and sell the family silver.
We had our roads cleaned, rubbish collected on Mondays till this month, but this morning the expected collection never took place.
After seeing the rubbish strewn all over my front garden thanks to kind neighbours piling the rubbish half in my garden and some kind souls kicking the sacks and playing football with cartons and cans, I was rather annoyed and called the council at 11.30 this morning, I was told that the collection would be any time between 6.30 Am and 4.30 PM, that they would definitely come.
Thankfully, they did turn up at around half twelve to do the needful.
Let a couple of recycle bags though, for the life of me I cannot understand why...
They didn't get the publicity quite right, did they? Giant signs on the lorries, and right on the home page of their website with a search to find what's happening in my road. But there are some things I do like about Wandsworth and waste:
And there are things I like about Wandsworth generally:
PS: No, I don't work for the Council!
I've just read the latest comment with interest. So, are Wandsworth council now collecting garden waste for free? This is great news. I have a tiny garden with no room for composting and most of my garden waste is overhanging ivy from my neighbours garden so I resent having to pay for it.
In Trevelyan Road the rubbish, recycling and garden rubbish was collected on Monday and then followed by a street sweep. Today (Good Friday) has seen another sweep and the scarab vehicle sucking up the sweepings. Brill. Overkill perhaps?
However the rubbish piled at the junction with Charlemont continues to grow and no sign of the Wandsworth enforcement team doing anything to prevent this continuing problem.
Haven't you got councillors living on your road?. Perhaps that was why they are so thorough
Biffa waste have not gone into administration. Follow this link dating back to July 2011 when Serco were announced as having won the waste contract for Wandsworth.http://www.letsrecycle.com/news/latest-news/councils/serco-chosen-for-wandsworth-collection-deal.
It's an 8 year contract you will be pleased to know Colin
I'm inclined to agree with Urbangardener's comments. Our new collection day is Friday; the binmen turned up yesterday (a bank holiday) & took domestic rubbish, garden waste & recycling. The previous contractors came round twice on same day - to collect waste & recycling each on separate lorries. The new contractor had a lorry that is split at the back to take both types of collection ...... presumably saving £ by only having to visit each road once.
The only continuing relatively 'small' irritation I have is that they piled the rubbish in piles at intervals on the pavement/street in advance - leaving bits of rubbish & stray yucky liquids strewn behind after collection & also they left dustbin lids cast aside. However the previous contractors did the same & in the general scheme of things .......
Thanks for the link Tigger. I thought I'd only seen the Serco logo on those secure prison vans back and forth from Wandsworth Prison. Looked up serco.com and it seems they are involved in heaps of different businesses! I hope they are good at collecting the rubbish. 8 years is a long to wait if they aren't.
Our new collection day is Friday, but they didn't collect. Finally got our rubbish collected today (Saturday! - I thought they weren't going to do Saturdays anymore; I hope it is just in order the massive backlog). Now the street is just strewn with all of the detritus they have left behind. Hoping it's not long before they send one of those brush trucks through.
They seem to take longer to get down the road because they have less people and a combined truck, but one good thing I noticed today is that they move aside to let cars past. Remember how the last contractor never did that? Their trucks just sat like big blimps in the middle of the road letting miles of cars bank up behind.
My collection day was Monday, it didn't change from previously but my and my neighbour's rubbish has still not been collected despite 3 phone calls to the council! Yesterday I walked down into tooting and I have never seen so many piles of rubbish bags dumped on the pavements along with all the resulting detritus from fox and other animal scavengings upon what must be a real feast for them! I'm surprised the local newspapers/tv stations haven't latched onto this story yet!
Thanks Tigger. I missed that information. still feel that the whole thing was not handled well. The 8 year contract will have ( I hope ) clauses to ensure that the work is meeting the service level agreements and can be cancelled if SERCO do not meet these. So let us see how long they last.
My collection day was unchanged but my rubbish was not taken. Today dragged myself out of bed really early to catch the binmen who used to come at around 6.30 and 2 hours later none in sight. I do hope that they arrive as limited space to store and plenty of foxes to get at it.
Yippee!!!! At 10.00 this morning, on my correct day, the binmen arrived and took my rubbish!! It does however seem that throwing the bin lid into the garden is something that isn't going to change with the new contractors!
My collection day was changed from Tuesday to Monday. Last Monday my rubbish was taken by some very pleasant dustmen who put the bin back put the lid on and closed the gate. The big problem was the neighbours who hadn't put their rubbish out. This week it happened exactly like last week bin emptied, bin back, lid on but still some of the neighbours hadn't caught on. How much rubbish will they accumalate before they realise
Trevelyan Road rubbish collected this morning. Great.
The rubbish at the corner was taken yesterday. Replaced again this morning and gone again now. No doubt it will be back again by Wednesday!!
When I last checked, our rubbish day hadn't changed from Tuesday so I was very surprised when the binmen came this morning - and on a bank holiday. I thought I would re-check the day they are supposed to collect and it has now been changed to Monday - I suppose I ought to keep checking in case they change it again.
Our day changed but rubbish was not collected till Thursday instead of Monday. We never get the Guardian, and seldom Brightside. Not everyone living in Wandsworth uses Internet. I do not check Wandsworth.gov.uk unless i need to look something up, usually to report faulty street lights and the like.
frankly, for something as important as this we should have been informed and in good time. Typical tory council to think that every one is connected and constantly monitors what they are doing.
