Off-road bike

Having been off-road cycling on a road bike with drop handle -bars over the bank holiday weekend I am seriously considering buying a mountain bike spending about £600-£700. Off-road on a road bike is hard to keep balance especially on gravel. Two bike shops have been recommended to me - Putney Cycles and Apex Cycles (Clapham). I would need expert advice especially regarding the size of the bike - I have been wrongly advised in the past. Has anyone purchased a bike in the recent past from either of these shops and if so what was your view?

Go to Putney cycles, they are really good. Helped my husband find exactly what he was looking for (also an off road bike). They are helpful without being pushy! They also service the bike and when my husband had parts stolen off his bike (just before a charity event he was doing at the weekend) they had it fixed in a matter of days.
