Push along mower V small electric hover

Who's faced this decision before?

For a small lawn -  21 square metres- (ie rectangle 7m x 3m)
What's the best for a good and quick finish?

What did you buy and why?

I may have a push along mower looking for a new home shortly......

A small hover.  I got a Flymo mow n vac for £49.99 at Argos because I have a small lawn and you don't need anything complicated for 10 minutes every two weeks.

i agree with Caroline w.
same one that i've got ,was alot better than my push mower ,you need a bigger lawn with a push along.

Depends what you mean by good finish.  There is no doubt that the hover is easier, quicker and perfectly adequate for the job but if you want it to look "good" ie with the cuts visually distinct and nice "lines"  be it fore and aft or even better cross cut after then there is no rival to the push mower. It is a pita to do and needs careful adjustment between early season cuts and late season cuts and not that many people are that mad!

i researched this same thing several years back, when i had a garden of very similar size.. in spite of the recommendations of others, i was warned strongly against a flymo, as when they break, nobody will consider fixing them. also wanted a more even finish. was recommended a small electric Bosch push mower and was very happy with it. happy mowing!

Hi all

Thanks for your thoughts - from all sides of the garden fence!

I'm finding this very hard - some people say they're better some people go for Flymos

What about the energy use? and the carbon footprint etc

does anyone have an opinion?

- I'm like the keeping fit bit - and the exercise isn't problem - so that's a plus

Thanks Tucker to bring up the repair issue I hadn't thought of that - and we do have a couple of repair guys around here
Bosch - i've seen them - quite impressed with the video. - Thanks for the recommend

either option will suck up energy like the high-voltage appliance it is... both pretty bad... if you don't mind the pushing, and you're not overly concerned with a golf course finish, go for it! make us proud!

Your garden is small enough to cut with shears, if you really want the exercise...

Last year I bought a new push-along mower (thinking of the carbon footprint). It's a beauty and cost me no more than 50 quid. I realised that in my long life I had never used a new mower before and that old mowers are usually clogged up with grassy sludge or have their own geriatric problems. There's something really nice about pushing the thing along because it positively springs into action and purrs as it goes.

Just an update on this, I picked up Suzanne's old push along for a small fee and it is an absolute peach, it hums, purrs and whizzes along.

Anyone after a crappy plastic orange hover for a tenner let me know !

I used to have a Flymo but gave it away after a year - my garden was slightly uneven and the Flymo would rip into the high bits and leave the low bits too short. I hated it!

I then got a gorgeous push along Brill Razorcut Premium 33 - it is a "best buy" on Which. I love it- looks great, works great, packs up great, but too hard work for a very large lawn. Anyone interested in buying it off me, let me know because I'm about to stick it on ebay.

I've had to get a petrol mower now - a Honda ezy. Tried it out yesterday for the first time and felt very grown up!

I have a  Powerbase Push Cylinder Mower going spare if anyone needs one  - doesn't have the grass collector.  They are forty quid at the moment so would accept say £15! I'm on Lavenham Road.

Also have an Ebac dehumidifier if anyone is interested!
