I agree but if you are a keen gardner or have a large garden I have found the green wheelie bins a much better way of disposing garden waste, ( you still have to pay but it could work out cheaper than bags depending on amount of waste ). Richard.
I am a keen gardener and do have quite a big garden so I do have one of the green wheelie bins and that works well for us . The green bags just seem such a con to me , in that you can't use bags purchased from the supermarket you have to purchase the ' special ' bags which cost about £1 each and then they are not even collected separately to be used to make compost . I think Havering are poor re recycling , my neighbour washes out the pouches that cat foods comes in , on the back it has the recycle logo but she has had a letter telling her not to put them in as Havering don't recycle those . Also in Brentwood people are given crates to put bottles and jars in and these are collected fortnightly . I know there are bottle banks , but not everybody has a car so I would assume the glass waste that non car owners have goes in their black bags , not good !! Rant over !
Mark , you're probably right it's just another way of getting money out of us despite the fact we already pay council tax , and please don't ever be a few days late taking a library book back you would almost need to arrange a bank loan to pay the fine !!
Mark, I have 2 composters plus the use of a shredder, & I have enough space, but as you so rightly comment not every person has these factiliies, LB of H should really address these probs. Resycle is the only way forward
My compost attempts some years ago were not successful , ended up with a very wet , smelly pile . Wouldn't try again as I now don't really have anywhere now I could put one that would be out of sight . Having said that if you can do it successfully then I think they are a good idea
At least Essex Council stopped charging for non Easex residents using the Coxtie Green refuse site. Now that was a silly move and just led to even more fly tipping
Looked into this ages ago and got told you have to pay for the green bags because all the council tax pays for is household waste and not garden waste. Therefore as usual its yet another hidden cost
Mark , couldn't agree more , another way to get money out of us . Now another rant ! Does anybody go over to Hilldene shops and just despair at the amount of rubbish people throw on the floor . Mums walk out of the bakers , give their child in buggy a sticky bun and throw the bag on the ground , children eat sweets and throw the wrappers down , seriously what is wrong with these people ?!
Florence, this is a real pet hate of mine! Why do people have so little respect for where they live? Instead of persecuting motorists for parking, the council should have litter patrols giving out spot fines to litter louts - and dog owners who don't clear up after their pets!
Mark I agree with you so much , some people have no sense of responsibility , my children never ever threw litter because from very little I showed them that if we can't find a bin we put it in our pocket or shopping bag till we get home . Same with dogs , we have always had dogs up till 2 years ago when our German Shepherd died but whether we were walking round the streets or as was usually the case over Bedfords Park we always carried nappy sacks to clear up . Yep on the spot fines for these low life's !
They say there are dog wardens on duty ready to issue fines. I've got a Black Lab and use Bedfords and Havering Country Park. Never ever seen one. Think of the revenue that this would bring in because, particularly in Havering Country Park, I hardly ever see any dog owner picking up.
With regard to green sacks, the last time I bought them they were £11 for 10. What irritates me in that some people put their garden rubbish in black sacks, and it is very clear what it contains, but the bin men take it anyway. I have a friend in Chadwell Heath and all their sacks are provided free of charge.
Couldn't agree more about Bedfords Park. I've stopped going over there as I got fed up cleaning dog's poo off my shoes. All the Warden needs to do is stay near the car park and cafe and they'd collect a fortune in fines!
I can,t understand this council we pay more council tax than any other part of London apart from Richmond and Kingston, yet they want to extract more with all these cons like green bags for garden waste, and the good old spy camera car hiding and waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting motorist. The cheapest way to dispose of garden waste is to stick it the car and take it to the council dump
When I lived in SW London and they introduced the Poll Tax, it was - wait for it - £501 a person, so that meant we paid £1,503. I am going back a while, but a friend of mine lived in Havering at the time and it was £250. I agree Michael, they make a bomb out of the spy cars, but where is it going?

Yes, it's ridiculous. Surely couldn't just be a way to make money could it?!!
Might as well put green waste in black sacks-far cheaper!
Richard.
What more can I say you are 100% right.
Richard.
