SWP meeting: are we becoming a police state?
The Tooting branch of the Socialist Workers Party hosts fortnightly meetings at the Tooting Grove Clubroom on Effort Street, next to St George's Hospital. They are open to everyone.
The subject of the next one is "Are we becoming a police state?"
When we look at the way our civil liberties are being eroded, the way whole communities can be criminalised, and the ever increasing powers of the police, it can seem like Britain is becoming a police state.
There are particularly worrying cases in our area, with the internment of Babar Ahmad and Syed Ahsan – and the continued imprisonment of Shaker Aamer in Guantanamo.
How is the situation likely to develop? Will every democratic gain we've ever won be taken from us, if we allow it? How can we best fight for our rights?
Come and join the debate - kicked off with a talk by journalist Anindya Bhattacharyya.
