Hope it is going to be a Lydl, Aldi or Morrisons then.  Doubt that it will be Morrisons because there is one just up the road.

Its going to be a Waitrose
Jeaninactive
I was thinking about that this morning Gareth.  I think Waitrose will need to bring their prices down a bit!  I know they have offers, their food is good quality, but they are expensive.  Even M&S have brought their prices down.

thank you for the info do waitrose  know they are in the middle of  3 well known supermarkets
can not see them making any profit  not even enough to pay the rent

God forbid, another Tesco Express ! We have enough supermarkets hurting the local smaller shops. The council should be encouraging businesses such as a service or manufacturing unit there (there use to be a pine furniture making place next to the B and Q). Maybe the council could offer favourable rates to a business while it builds a new enterprise there that gives prospect to providing skills to employees and not just sales/cashiers.

It seems that the company who bought the site were granted licence to operate as a supermarket.  I am assuming that they will be looking to lease it to someone rather than open up a business themselves. I reckon it is up for grabs to whoever offers first!

Like many GOB's I can remember getting and giving direction to various places by the pubs on the route. Now if you want to travel from Dovers Corner at Rainham to Heathway junction with Oxlow Lane it will go something like ' PassTescos Express on the left, sraighton at the Bull, pass the Tescos Express on your left, at the lights turn left, and pass the Tescos Express on your right. !!!

I don't blame the smaller towns in England, demonstrating against the might of supermarkets like Tescos. Trying to put a halt to the Americanised way we seem to be developing - they have seen our haberdashers, delis, butchers and pubs etc disappear while supermarkets and shopping Malls spring up.

Passed it this morning on my way to have my eyes tested, and it says it is still up for rental or sale.  Popped into Morrisons for a few bits and pieces and I don't think Waitrose (if they are opening a store)  will be able to compete with their prices.  And you are right Ken - far too many Tesco Expresses.

the plans say that it is owned by ravreside investments i no that they applied to alter what can be sold at the site and that was food that was granted i think last year the hours of opening mon to fri 7:00 am to 11:00 pm
sat 7:00 am to 11:00 pm sun10 am to 7 pm  will watch this one

I work at the Barking and Dagenham Post and have asked the council about this. At the moment they won't say what supermarket it is, but will keep an eye on it and let people know when I do.

have you been on the lbbd planning online site all the planning details are on it the planing n/o is 12/00303/ful everything is on there evening  open times on the app form but not who the suppermarket is i will go bact the website later and have another look and nothing has happened to the site yet so what is going on
mad artful dodger greg s
just seen some new paperwork  the bit that is intresting is it will be occupied by a national multiple grocer that could be anybody
Ken Rinactive
I wonder why the apparent secrecy ? Surely the prospective tenant/leasee is not afraid tha this bid will be gazumpt by a rival national 'grocer'
I can only see a three possible advantages to yet another supermarket at this location.
1. The site will look better than the current derelict warehouse.
2. It may possibly bring some employment to the local area.
3. It may be more convenient for some of the less mobile local residents

But with my synical hat on I have to question why  the main national supermarket groups continue to flood areas with more outlets which do not appear to affect their annual profit returns. One can only assume their must be some tax breaks etc. However probably the answer to this question would be to confusing to me, I only took eccomomics at A level. !
Why, when competing for a bigger share of the market do they not reduce pricesby greater amounts. The loss to their profit margins would be offset by the reduction in their capital outlay for new stores........ but then I am just a simple layman who has to 'put steam on the table' for my family.

I hope they don't use "free" jobseekers as their staff instead of locally unemployed people.  I agree that the site will look better than the current derelict warehouse.

thanks ken this is what ive been thinking for months why the secrecy last week i got a comment from sara o

b and q update 11/07/12 tue

sometime last night travelers turn up in the car park hope the council can get rid of thjem as quick as they can as the last time they left a mess this type of traveler pays  notrhing for the area(council tax rent rates)
Michael Y
I think the big 4 supermarkets have to much power, and planning permission for new outlets should be more restricted, but my main objection is to the satellite stores such as Tesco Express they take business from the small retailer and stifle competition
mad artful dodger greg s
first thing the travelers must left last night  i had a look again yesterday and found a least 4 planing apps
dated 1-2006 2-2007 3-2010 4-18/4/2012  and on variation of condition 11 so the site could used as a foodstore this appears to have started in 2006 no 1 tro no 3 all permitted   may be lbbd could tell us why
Gareth J
like I have previously stated it is due to become just a large Waitrose, morrisons are supposedly also planning a new store on ice rink site
mad artful dodger greg s
gareth j
why will they not say witch suppermarket is going to take it over i lived about 200 yds away to me this is a ghost supermarket i think they have not got a tennat for it

Ken Rinactive
I would like to accept Gareth J's information as being correct as it would mean that I no longer have to drive to Hornchurch or Upminster to use my favoured supermarket.

If it is correct it would appear that Waitrose are trying to trade in a new socio-economic area to their norm.

I would hope that if they move to this site that they maintain the level of service found in other outlets.Their stores always appear to me to be less chaotic than some of their rivals. I have always found the staff to be smart, courteous, knowledgeable and helpful, not a description which I would use for some, and I emphasise some, of the staff employed by their rivals !
Kayte
I agree Ken, it would be nice but it does seem VERY unlikely given the demographics of the area.  I, like Greg S, don't think they have a tenant as yet. I am more than happy to be proven wrong though.
