Gravesend shops

Hello, we have another big debate we want your views on... plans for a new Tesco Metro in Whinfell Way have been approved. Do you prefer large supermarket chains to independent smaller stores? Which is more convenient and which is better priced?

Those Large supermarkets are killing the hard working small shop owners and you dont get the personnel touch with large supermarkets I went into a small supermarket in Whinfell way it had everything in it I would recomend it if you were having a party as it had everything for party and cheap in there

For my part the loss of the local garage is the big problem as the service they give is so friendly.I am waiting to see if the local council inform us as to why they had to pay £15000 compensation over this planning issue and who was responsible----the planning commitee or planning officer

The large supermarkets are so powerful and generally have all manner of agencies working for them to ensure that the councils vote their way. The small retailers do not stand a chance.

The ship (pic a bit small) looks like the passenger ship Marco Polo, it departed yesterday for a 2 week 'round Ireland' voyage.
Have been to Westfield once (on a Saturday), worst day for crowds of course, but spent most of the time in a restaurant with my daughters as we met there to 'catch up'! Haven't heard about it closing. Will ask one of my girls, she lives that way.

Hi chatters

Yes that pic of Marco Polo shows very small - I think some people know how to enlarge it on screen but I don't - sorry -it's big when it leaves me :-)

Interesting about the Westfield centre - hope that you had a good catchup!
Re the so called trouble expected there - maybe it was just rumour - guess on line latest news about it could tell us more.

Bring back Chiesmans, I say!   anybody remember that store with the cafe at the top with a fantasic view of Gravesend and the river?   We seemed to have some quality shops in those days - now its mobile phone and pound shops galore.   suppose its progress - shudder.   Well we still have Debenhams and of course the Tescos is handy for people to get to.

Janet - have you joined something yet??/  Good luck with that....

Mary C
I agree Chesmans had every thing lovely meeting place and also everything for knitters and dressmakers also bring back the co op it was brillant for household it seems we are going backwards in town empty shops or we have pound shops
Hilary D
Yes I do remember Chiesmans, I can also remember when there was a lovely wool shop in Harmer Street. Betty Bunts???
I do like the 99p shops though, lol.
Bee L
now, really looking back - remember David Griegs and Woolworths, Gurgles in the High Street!!!?  You are all probably too young ....

Yes. I am fascinated too by the pound shops and love to munge as my mum used to say  lol
Mary C
I have fond memories of David Griegs in London going with my mum and I always remember our lovely wooloworths and betty's in Harman street for buttons it was like alladin cave in there and british home stores it had a lovely resturant in there

Those were the days Bee when all those lovely shops were there for us to enjoy.  Bryant and Rackstraws were before Woolworths in the main road, Woolworths being a smaller store in the High Street, Boots were also in the High Street alongside a fantastic Ironmongers, the name of which escapes me at the moment.

My daughter bought me a small sewing machine for my birthday 18 months ago but it sits there as we do not have a shop that sells decent materials anymore such as the Co-op used to provide, I believe Rochester is the nearest.

We also had the Plaza, Super, Regal and Majestic cinemas to entertain on our modest incomes.

I had an aunt who used to buy a perfume from Woolworths called California Poppy, it was awful really but she liked it!

John lewis sells material  at bluewater and i think the sewing shop in queen street sells some
Joyia H
Thank you Mary, I have looked in John Lewis but found the materials to be very expensive, I will have a look in Queen Street.

Joiya ,
Re fabrics - dont forget the Indoor Market.  VERY reasonable £ and I'm sure the proprietor would endeavour to assist if you need something in particular.
Also, the Bag Shop in High Street has a  selection of fabrics at the back of the shop and I'm pretty sure there are still a couple of shops selling dress making fabrics in Wrothan Road.

Hi Mary C - did you see my private message? Thanks
Karen B
what is being built next to Morrisons- does anyone know?
Hilary D
It's going to be a restaurant, ie like Beefeater, but a different company.  Senior moment - can't think of it's name, anyone else know?
Mary C
I told it was one off the Toby chains resturant but it does not look very big
Janet H
It could be worse....a carvery restaurant sounds good........
Mary C
True it could have been flats
Janet H
Or a drive through McDonalds or KFC.....
Bee L
Thats interesting. I didn't know, but just presumed that it was an extension to the velo park. Places to eat are always welcome but next to a very busy A road? Hmmm...
Mary C
There is a sign on site now for Toby grill and will be opened in autumn
Bee L
Thanks for that info, Mary. Will be able to nip in there for lunch after shopping at Morrissons.

Speaking of which, have you tried Morissons fish and chips - really good - freshly cooked and very reasonable priced.
Mary C
No I have not tried fish and chips because I go to Morrison at 7 in the morning and I sometime go there on Sunday morning at 10 clock thanks for the tip but I will try the Toby grill
