Crossing at Brighton Yard Clapham Junction

The entrance I think is called Brighton Yard on St Johns Hill and is a good idea and well used. However there is no safe place to cross the busy road. I feel it is only a matter of time until someone gets killed. Do people think we need a Pedestrian Crossing there ?.

Yes!!! I cross there every day and it is really dangerous as traffic often comes belting down the hill and you can't see them coming!

Absoliutely. It is difficult to believe the planners can remodel all of this area without putting in sensible crossing facilities. Why not stop more of the buses near this entrance too are relieve pressure further down the hill. Ditto with taxis.

I agree there needs to be a crossing, and also a bus stop nearer. If you need to use the station lifts, you either have to get a taxi to the Brighton Yard entrance, or drag your cases, or dodgy knees etc, up the hill. It's often a toss-up between climbing the stairs or climbing the hill!

I agree - my son travels to school via CJ and it's a constant worry to me that he will be knocked over at the crossing at the bottom of the hill, especially as the buses seem to ignore the lights.  That crossing is so congested in rush hours, another one near the side entrance would help.  How to get in touch with planners to put change in place before the inevitable accident happens?

jl I agree but not sure how we go about it. I will look at the Wandsworth Council website. Does anyone else on Street life know how we can move this further?

This is what I sent to Jane E Local MP and Wandsworth Council if anyone can do better please do

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to raise my concern about the lack of a pedestrian crossing at the Brighton Yard entrance at Clapham Junction station. This entrance is both well used and a good idea. However I am amazed at the lack of planning, thought,  Health & safety even common sense as to  how pedestrians are able to cross the busy St Johns road safely. It is only a matter of time until someone gets killed. Many school children attending Emmanuel school use this entrance and cut through the Peabody  estate along with many other commuters. I really want to see the copies of the Risk assessments carried out on the opening of this entrance.

writing to your local councillor or to the Northcote local councillors is a good start. The council website gives contacts

As I pointed out in an earlier post about the timing of the crossing further down the road outside the Station this is a red route and therefore TFL are responsible. Good luck getting that organisation to listen to local views!

Only last week I saw a woman knocked down crossing the road by the new entrance tothe station

I brought this up long ago (when the entrance was first opened) with South West Trains who apparently run the station.  They said "it was being looked at"!!

I think our local elected London Assembly member Richard Tracy (or Tracey) has some londonwide TfL type responsibility. Worth a try.

Definitely needed. 3 buses stop at the "new" entrance (37.337 and 170) which helps, but catching a west-bound bus is really difficult. Try contacting Richard Treacey the conservative London Assembly member for Merton and Wandsworth http://www.richardtracey.co.uk/

If I'm remembering it right, the plans for the new Peabody Estate (that's a replacement of the large dark red brick 1930s estate more or less opposite the Brighton Yard entrance) include a crossing right outside Brighton Yard paid for by the developers.  This is because the rebuilt estate (as currently proposed) has a new pedestrian route through the middle of the complex, suggesting this will become an even busier crossing.

Of course the planning process is still going on, so it could be some years if this goes ahead (and it might not go ahead at all).

Has anyone written to a councillor or Richard Tracey yet?
jl
I wrote to Richard Tracey yesterday with a link to this thread.  Will update if I hear anything.

well done - I will too when I get a minute

I have emailed Jane E the MP and will also contact Richard Tracey. Thank you all for your comments on this issue.
I would ask that you please write to Richard, Jane E and anyone else you think may be able to help, as there will be a fatal accident especially with the number of young people using this entrance .
Good Luck Alll. If enough people write they must listen. It is common sense after all.

Hello All,
This was the reply I got from Jane E. The problem is this could be ages away and the redevelopment is not popular with many residents .

Dear Mr Doherty

Jane has asked me to thank you for your email and to respond so that we avoid too much delay.

As you may be aware, there is a planning application for the redevelopment of the Peabody Estate which is due to be considered by the Council this Wednesday (18 July).  Part of that application involves a pedestrian crossing from Brighton Yard to the Peabody Estate.  I have spoken to Officers at the Town Hall and I am told that, if the planning application is approved then the pedestrian crossing would be installed as soon as possible.

I hope these comments are helpful.

Regards

Hi Guys,
                    Got this from Richard Tracey.

Thank you for this. You have a very good point. The road here is controlled by Wandsworth Council and I will pass your suggestions to officers there.

Good wishes

Sorry f you get this twice but I find all sorts of difficulties writing on this site and I'v e typed all this once tonight already.  John Hallmark's reply to Colin D on behalf of Jane Ellison really makes my blood boil implying that people who object to the Peabody plans are responsible for delaying the construction of this crossing. How much does a crossing cost?  How many accidents add up to the price of a crossing? But then of course the accident cost comes out of the NHS budget not Wandsworth Council's. I am prepared to stand at the site of this crossing, cap in hand and I bet it wouldn't take long to raise the price of the installation of it. ,

I think the point is, the crossing facilities are totally disconnected with the Peabody application.
Good crossing facilies and the sensible siting of bus stops etc is connected with the re=opening of the Brighton Yard. Wandsworth contributed finacially to this project and have therefore known about the need from the start of the Drighton Yard project.
Margaret G
How long until the Peabody Estate is developed, if it is?  A crossing is needed now!
drole
I agree with Andrew the need for a crossing is not solely linked to the Peabody Estate. In fact it is linked to the new exit from the station
Vivian B
There are traffic lights one way and a pedestrian crossing the other way - walk to the nearest one to you.  Most sensible solution in the absence of a crossing where it is convenient for this new entrance.  OR take your life in your hands and put the motorist in the wrong by actually using the road perhaps.
