Crossing at Brighton Yard Clapham Junction

The entrance I think is called Brighton Yard on St Johns Hill and is a good idea and well used. However there is no safe place to cross the busy road. I feel it is only a matter of time until someone gets killed. Do people think we need a Pedestrian Crossing there ?.

The problem with that Vivian is that the pedestrian crossing is dangerous - as I said earlier, buses often go through the red light to turn right up St John's Hill while people are crossing on the green man.  Of course when someone gets killed something will be done about it (as happened on Bolingbroke Grove a few years ago) but it would be nice to get something done before that.

Incidentally I haven't had a response from Richard Tracey which is annoying!

Vivian B I think you are missing the point. People use this entrance because it is convenient . The whole idea of the Brighton Yard entrance was to relieve the congestion at Clapham Junction Main entrance. Why would anyone walk down to the lights at the main entrance then walk back to Brighton Yard?
Nobody has said the motorist is in the wrong by driving on St Johns Rd. The prob is the lack of a safe place to cross a busy road to gain entrance to one of the largest stations in London.

Colin - unless you live in the block opposite - you will have to have approached the area by foot or bus.  If you get off your bus at either bus stop on the 'wrong' side of the road, it is a very very short walk to a proper crossing, one in place already.  The traffic lights at the crossing by the old cinema or the one by Sainsbury's lower down.

A thread erlier stated that you couldn't see the vehicles driving fast down the hill...

I don't think that two pedestrian crossings some few yards apart will be practical, is all.  So - is there an argument for removing the pedestrian crossing already in place???

Vivian, I do not live on the Peabody . I live off Battersea Rise, I and many others cross the St Johns Rd every morning and evening . Take a look for yourself if you want evidence.
I understand the congestion issue two crossings may cause but this must be a price worth paying to save life's . I do not think we should move one the other crossings as one is near a school and the other is at the other more busy entrance to Clapham Junction.
I understand that planning permission has been granted for development of the Peabody and Richard T said that a crossing was included. So let's see.

Hello All,
<           FYI another email from Jane E  case worker.

Jane has asked me to thank you for your email.  I hope you got my email from the other day and I reproduce the text of that email below.

"Jane has asked me to thank you for your email and to respond so that we avoid too much delay.

As you may be aware, there is a planning application for the redevelopment of the Peabody Estate which is due to be considered by the Council this Wednesday (18 July).  Part of that application involves a pedestrian crossing from Brighton Yard to the Peabody Estate.  I have spoken to Officers at the Town Hall and I am told that, if the planning application is approved then the pedestrian crossing would be installed as soon as possible."

For your information, the Peabody application was approved last night which means that the crossing will happen.

Without going into the huge amount of anger generated by the way the Peabody planning application  reached approval I think it's interesting that Jane Ellison's caseworker, John Hallmark is the very same John Hallmark who is on the planning committee panel, and is one of the councillors who voted for this scheme.  With reference to the statement in his latest letter to Colin D he says the pedestrian crossing will go from Brighton Yard to the Peabody Estate. I think we should watch the plans very carefully in case - in some way - this ends up being not a simple zebra-type road crossing, but some sort of tunnel ending up in the new Peabody.
Colin D
Gwen, Please tell me how the Peabody planning application reached approval? Personally I think it is stupid to put more pressure on an already straining infrastructure. I have told Jane E my views. Please share.

Vivian - I don't live on the Peabody, but like many others, cut through the Peabody on my walk to the station.

Colin, all the information about that Peabody planning application  when it was approved is here:http://cjag.org/2012/07/19/peabodys-proposal-has-been-appproved/

CJAG is a very effective group who managed to stop a plan to build two huge blocks of flats at the centre of Clapham Junction.  Unfortunately, this time they have been less successful but I doubt if they have given up yet. (CJAG stands for Clapham Junction Action Group). Sorry about my information coming in fits and starts but there is something wrong with my comments box.
Vivian B
Andrew h - then a crossing would benefit you and others who use this route.  But would you want the one lower down St John's Hill removed .. or a happy medium reached where there is one pedestrian crossing somewhere in the middle?

Colin D .. sorry I disagree.  There must be a happy medium somewhere.  someone along that route will have to walk further ...
andrew h
No - I want safe crossings at both entrances to the station. I would argue that this is perfectly reasonable as the number of pedestrians using these entrances VASTLY exceeds the number of cars/motorist who are using the road.
Gwen E
Must say I agree with Andrew there are simply hundreds of people pouring out of both entrances specially at rush-hour. Also, there are a lot of people who will take the shortest possible route and if that means jay-walking that is what they'll do. There IS one plan worth considering : at the crossing at the flower stall, most people choosing to cross at the crossing are going to the bus stops opposite, otherwise they might choose to cross at the lights, which are onlly a few yards away. IF the two bus stops were swapped and the 37/337/170/39/156/87 bus stop was where the 295/C1 stop is - or maybe a tiny bit further up the road
Gwen E
........and a major pedestrian crossing (are there such things?)  fed the main bus stop, then this could also serve the Brighton Yard travellersbecause it would be very near the steps down from the B.Yard entrance.Sorry, not very good at verbal descriptions, need to draw you a plan.

Wrote to Riichard Tracey 5 days ago, no reply so far!
The new entrance is such an asset, it's a pity we can't make it safer now for passengerscrossing St John's Hill.
Colin D
Linda try cc in Jane Elllison when you email Richard T. I did and got a prompt reply.
Vivian Andrew does make a true point go and look for yourself .

I spoke with one of the ward councillors about this - it is apparently in progress and in discussion about how a "Wandsworth controlled" crossing will be connected and phase with the "TfL controlled" traffic lights at the nearby junction.
