Next Wandle Trust cleanup: Sunday 12th August 2012 Beddington Park, SM6

Passing on a message from Erica at the Wandle Trust.

===============================
Hello Everyone!

Owing to spectacular amounts of rainfall earlier this year, and some dedicated 'blitzing' in previous years, we thought that the Himalayan balsam hadn't returned in any great numbers to Beddington Park, but having been up there on a recce last Sunday, it has sneakily re-appeared and there's enough to keep us all busy during our next cleanup.

So, on Sunday 12th August we will assemble in the car park behind Carew Manor in Beddington Park and set about removing it.  There is a stand of balsam in the relief channel on Beddington Lane and a few stems in that same channel where it comes into the park under the road, so we'll send a small group up to get it, but the remainder of the time we'll spend in the park.

Please click here  to see where we'll be meeting.

What to expect

Please arrive in time for our Health and Safety briefing at 11am.  If you arrive later than that, don't worry, you'll be asked to read the briefing and sign in to confirm your understanding of the guidelines, and agreement to adhere to them.

We'll work through until 3pm with a break at about 1pm for tea, coffee and cake provided by us.  You may like to bring your own picnic lunch.

We're extremely grateful to David and the rest of the Waste Management team at Sutton Council for their support in removing rubbish/HB too.

What to wear/ What to bring

We provide a number of pairs of safety chest waders for you to use. We also provide gloves and other pieces of equipment including litter pickers. Please wear old clothes you don't mind getting dirty and we recommend Wellingtons for those who want to work on the banks. We have 'recycled' a number of pairs of waders, which have been cut down to Wellington boots.  If you'd like to wear these, please remember to bring a pair of socks.

No flip flops or sandals to be worn during the cleanup please as they don't provide adequate foot protection.

As the balsam is growing in the nettles it is worth bringing/wearing trousers and long sleeved shirts to avoid getting stung!

The weather may be changeable, so it's always worth bringing additional layers of clothing including waterproofs and a hat. We will provide sunscreen and water if it's hot.  Do bring a change of socks and trousers just in case your waders spring a leak!

See you all on 12th!

Erica
