I'm looking for a really nice place in the Northcote Road, Balham, Clapham area to take an American friend for brunch next Thursday - can anyone suggest somewhere to go?
Sadly Boiled Egg and Soldiers sold out, I think a couple of years ago now. Our fave, the food is delicious is Brew on the Northcote Road, it is extremely popular but well worth waiting for a table although more quiet now as school hols.
If you want something typically English then wonderful Tony's on the other side of the Road for a traditional English breakfast, you can even have chips thrown into the equation.
Milk in Balham do a fantastic brunch. Good coffee, great ambiance and lovely staff. I used to go to the boiled egg and soldiers but think Milk is much better. They are located on Hildreth St just on the corner heading towards Bedford Hill.
There is a new restaurant opening in Tooting that are planning on doing a brunch menu, Tota. Keep your eye out for when they open as I'm hoping they'll provide a fantastic option in Tooting.
Second Milk in Balham. Good coffee and a good sized portion.
Now if we are talking Tooting, then as Julia says, it will have to be Tota when it opens but I am a bit biased on that one! Look out when the scaffolding comes down as the building above the restaurant has been freshly painted now giving a hint of what is to come at ground level!
Try out Eat Play Love, we have recently opened a family friendly cafe on 324, Battersea Park Road. fluffy pancakes, Eggs benedict, Royale, Florentine.....or one of our All day full English breakfast.
We had an excellent lunch in the Bolingbroke pub at the Broomwood Road end of Northcote Road recently.
It was very good quality; real food using natural ingredients and very reasonably priced. It's owned by the chain that also own The Stonhouse and The Abbeville in Clapham and they seem to have found a good formula for having a real pub atmosphere without being too pretentious. I believe that lunch is served well into the afternoon at all three pubs.

Your American friend might like the atmosphere.
