I put in an invented postcode of SW17 6RG and it came up on Streetmap as those houses that are where Tooting Bec Mental Hospital used to be, That block bounded by Church Lane, Mantilla Road and Franciscan Road.
I didn't realize those folks in there were so posh!
My guess is they mean the rectangle comprising the "heaver estate", crossing Balham High Road and continuing all the way along Trinity Road to Bellevue Road. It's all SW17 but about as far away from traditional Tooting as the moon is from Mars! And none of the people I know in those streets would describe themselves as living in Tooting, they say Balham or Wandsworth Common or Bellevue Village ... make of that what you will!
dont suppose anyone can link to the actual report so we can see for ourselves. the state of reporting is frankly shambolic, im getting fed up of it to be honest
From the tanatalising clues, I guess the telegraph means the Heaver estate too, but i dont think that goes across balham high rd. traditional Tooting? where is that then? i thought only estate agents could arbitrarily redefine geographical boundaries
come on roym, please don't get unnecessarily upset. Everyone differentiates different parts of a borough mentally or verbally, whether we are estate agents or not (and I'm not I proudly hasten to add). I had Tooting Broadway in mind when I made that comment and I think most people would. Maybe I should have said "Tooting proper".
Those newbuilds in Graveney ward must be pretty amazing if they trump Kensington!
It's not the new builds that are trumping Kensington - it's the average income - according to this report. Believe me, I live in one of these and they are nothing to write home about - just your average new build homes.
I want to know who to contact to claim my share of this above average income! ;¬)
By the way Minxette, are there any shops or cafes or pubs within that affluent area, or is it just houses? I've gone past most days but I've never been in there....
mungomuffit, dont worry im not getting overly shirty with you. I'm just keen to oppose the misappropriation of parts of Tooting. nip it in the bud so to speak.
i seem to recall the townhouses in that tooting bec hospital development were pretty eye-watering, but surely the houses along elmbourne for example are much more expensive? especially the ones that have not been modified into flats
might just be a case of - you can't believe what it says in the newspapers. And I do agree the standard of journalism in trying to understand and explain this number (rather than sensationalise it) is pretty poor/
roym, I did a bit of googling and couldn't find a public copy of the original report, and so much vagueness around the specific statistics that I gave up considering this a real story.
thumbs up for always questioning stuff that appears in the media and wanting to see the actual research / statistics behind the story.
I think it is the heritage park development (old tooting bec hospital) not the heaver estate, from the description. It's not surprising that average incomes here are high - it's where young professional couples rent or buy (mainly) flats together before moving on to / up the property ladder and starting families. They're known as DINKYs (double income no kids!). An average income for a couple of 66k isn't really that high in London if both of the couple work. I'm just surprised there aren't other areas of London with a similar demographic but higher incomes. I'd certainly question the authenticity of the stats and the reporting isn't great either!
@ caroline w: no shops, just residential. There is a nursery, doctor's surgery and sheltered housing for senior citizens - so if you were born there, you can die there too and all your needs will be taken care of!
yes, I'm questioning it too. I had a friend living there and it's really ordinary. Damn, I was briefly excited to think I lived in the richest part of the UK!
Thanks Roym, can understand your concern but I think that horse bolted eons ago. It's not particular to Tooting - it happens all over London. For one thing, London is a city of villages. For another thing, people want to define their own little part of the world as diferent/more special/whatever than the rest. It's just human nature.
tooting is a whole electoral constituency,,as in quite big. ,,i live in upper tooting ,, ,,,,,,,a couple of roads away i think is now called wandsworth common.,, every thing north of tooting bec tube seems now to be called balham , i think it is still tooting .. balham tube was once known as balham and upper. tooting ,,how things change !
Without wishing to go over old ground (though I suppose I am...), Heritage Park is obviously Tooting. It might not fit conveniently with some people's ideas of what Tooting is, but let's not be guilty of going along with estate agents' reworking of location names to suit their/your agenda.
And instead of calling Tooting Broadway "Tooting proper", why not be honest and call it "Tooting, but not the nice bits because I definitely don't want to be associated with that, even though I chose to live in SW17". More of a mouthful but more honest.I live in Tooting Broadway and I'm happy to live there.
Tooting Broadway is cool: it's where the shops and the bustle are. You wait till Antic get that artisan/farmer's market thing going behind the Castle, then Tooting will be proper chi-chi...
Mungomuffit, the reason people get hot under the collar is the utter disdain that you display for Tooting in any post on Balham/Tooting bordergate. As if Tooting is something embarrassing that we should all disassociate ourselves from. You can say that you live wherever you like as far as I am concerned. Just don't couple it with a criticism of "Tooting proper"/"Tooting where all of the curry houses are" etc.
wow Emma, are you having a bad day or something?! I haven't shown "utter distain" about Tooting actually. You are making some huge assumptions there. Your post is incorrect and very insulting.
I'm sure 99% of Londoners would associate Tooting with curry houses, surely you have noticed that there are one or two around? What is so wrong about stating the flippin' obvious, or are you embarrassed by them?
What I don't love is the self-appointed Tooting thought police telling me I can't refer to the "centre", "hub", guts, "main bit" of Tooting around The Broadway (which is what I meant by tooting "proper" - perhaps I didn't choose the best word) and saying that's where the curry places are. That's what most people think of when they think of Tooting.
Emma, it must have been about 6 months since I said that on a previous thread and you have obviously been stewing about it since then and brewing all out of proportion into some sort crime against Tooting.
If that's where this discussion is heading then count me out. It started out so nice and light-heated ...

Anyone know where this is, Telegraphs reports it as SW17 6, LBC as sw16 7!

Try not to get so hot under the collar about it! I'm glad you like your neighbourhood. I like mine too.
Then we will all be happy.
Thanks
