Allotments

The council propose to build on nearly two acres of Land near Melville road Rainham which at the moment is statuatory allotment land .With hundreds in the Borough waiting for a plot and thousands in the UK waiting for more than ten years to get one, this is a disgrace.
The meeting to discuss this is on 7th November please write to your local councillor to protest in these times when people would like to grow their own and the economic hardships this is a disgrace.
If any one wants a plot please phone the council services and ask for the park services dept.

Done in 3 post instead of 6 - lol.

Robert how about producing a standard template letter for residents of Havering to cut and paste into their email - this way we are all singing from the same hymn sheet. Could u knock something up and post for us please?
du
Melville road allotments.
We the residents of Havering wish to Express our protest regarding the proposed loss of  statutory allotment land to the rear of Melville Road Rainham.
With Long waiting Lists across the Borough and Years of waiting across the country.A time of high unemployment and the need for outdoor exercise. Now is not the time for this council to remove food growing land from the people of Havering.
We would like you our councillors' to make the committee discussing this proposal  on the 7th of November aware that we do not agree with the loss of badly needed amenity land.
Autumn19
Thanks Robert will do my email to my local coucillor using your template thanks again
Angela L
They need to prepare and build services before they keep building homes.  Our infrastructure cannot sustain this.  I think that if the private sector are to build more homes anywhere they should have to pay towards the provision of the increased health and education facilities that will be required.  They should not keep taking land when we are all having to gradually go back to basics and will need to provide a lot of our own food to survive.  The councillors and MP's are not planning ahead - yet again - and once land has gone and the skills and knowledge go with it, it is hard to regain.
du
Please phone park services and request your name be put on a waiting list for a local plot.
You can have half a plot for £20 a year which is enough for a family of four.
The Steward of Dunningford allotments in Rainham road North is rearranging the plots to fit in more people so try him for a plot.
You can get his name and number from park services his name is Mr Mee.
Castle Drive allotments have a waiting list but you could pressurise them to rearrange the plots as well.
Hundreds are waiting for plots you need to get your name on a list.
Its horrible to say but lots of plot holders are aged and the turnover can be quite quick.
Marion G
I have posted this on the Rainham Facebook page and also the Rainham Horticultural Societys FB page

I will be sending an email to all three Rainham Councillors
Ed Hinactive
Can someone at the Hornchurch and District Allotment Association please explain why allotment holders are charged £45 per plot which is supposed to be 10 rods and is actually only 8.75 rods. Following a freedom of information request I have discovered that the charge to the Association for the allotments that they control works out to £7.70 per plot. What do they squander the members money on? They have received Lottery grants to provide storage containers and machinery that no one is allowed to use only the elite few. They can not claim that we have unused plots and water is now limited due to the fitting of water troughs and the elimination of taps. The surplus amounts to over £31,000. Why cant plot holders pay the council direct and bypass the association?
du
If you feel you have a problem why not get enough of the plot holders together organise or go to the site meetings. Then either take over the control or get the problem sorted.
The water problems are being sorted with taps being reinstated as the troughs were a stupid idea .
I know that the site rent includes Insurance ,VAT and water costs plus equipment and storage etc.
The biggest problem is that the council leave the running of local plots to the site members who as you say set up little cliques although sometimes its because although lots of site members want things they wont do any work or even actually attend meetings so its left to a few.
We have 800 members in the Rainham Horticultural society but its hard work getting more than a Dozen to actually do anything.

There seems to be a strong feeling with regards to the proposed development of allotments in rainham. That said there is a few issues of the curruent management of allotments as a whole within Havering. The only way this will be challenged is for people to voice there opinion to there elected councillors.
I for one think there is something not quite right with the way this consultation has happened hence i have spoken to a well respected orgainisation who will take up the challenge ofkeeping this land as open space or for allotments.
If you can visit rainham horticultural societys facebook page and i will set up a poll on there for you to petition.
Any further questions please email showsecretaryrainham@yahoo.co.uk
du
Thanks James the notification of plot holders and local residents seems to have been very poorly handled. This development will seriously diminish the properties adjoining this land and make that part of the road very congested.
The question of Bonfires and disposal of rubbish is yet to be broached as well as the loss of light and access to the present plot holders.Imagine trying to get such a plan through in Emerson park it would not stand for twenty minutes. This fairly large development will make having a plot very hard with an inevitable increase in vandalism and theft.
Many thanks to Jeff Tucker and Councillor Durrant for representing us I had asked for other councillors assistance without response.
The Romford recorder is going to be at the meeting and will report on the records.
The more that can help the better.
Across Havering many people languish on a list for a plot but there is no coordination to match people with available plots its left to the on site committees who seem to have no means of coordinating need to availability.
Once this food growing land is lost it can not be recovered.
Autumn19
Robert when, where and what time is the meeting?

Can members of the public attend?

Are there any minutes that we can obtain and read through prior to the meeting?

If we can attend I would suggest that the more the merrier so to speak, it will show a form of unity and togetherness of the people of Havering.
du
The meeting is this Wednesday at the Town hall Romford for 7pm.
However members of the public are not allowed to speak on any council business.
They are no longer allowed in the Chamber of the hall being limited to a small section hidden from the councillors at the back and upstairs.
Democracy has long gone from Council meetings they are largely secret and unrepresented .Councillors Tucker and Durrant are attending and the Romford Recorder is going to be there.
I am hopefully going to another meeting organised by the Site commitees to discuss our way forward and the National societies are now involved and we hope have legal backing for a fight out side of the council process.
If you wanted to protest perhaps if enough went with placards outside the recorder could photograph them but attending the meeting or any council meeting is a pretty futile exercise they do not listen or indeed allow you to speak.
Get on to your local ward councillor and tell him to represent you or at least make clear your objections to this loss of much needed leisure land.
Autumn19
I agree with all you say Robert, hence the list of councillors that I supplied earlier and your standard template for all of us to use.

It is better to be united all giving the same view as if we all go off at a tangent then the main issue gets dilluted and lost.

So my suggestion is that we all follow your lead and send emails using your template to our councillors.

If there is to be placard waving then it would be more benefical if like minded people met beforehand and organised themselves - producing placards and standards that you would have to follow.

As it is such short notice I am not to sure I can attend this Wednesday meeting as have prior committments.

All that attend would you please be able to give feedback via site?

Good luck for Wednesday
du
If any would like an allotment there are a few vacant plots due to reorganising at the Dunningford site .    alongside the railway near the new development on the old school site entry by the alley opposite the council yard in Rainham road towards Romford. just under the bridge for the district line.
The steward is Mr Mee and he can be contacted on 01708 523295 limited sites get your name in quickly.
Yes I think it late for placards and I am attending another meeting to discuss this.
However if some one has an organisation like Green peace that can mobilise you are welcome just stand outside Romford town hall tomorrow at 7pm and say keep your hands off allotment land .
James G
Come on guys who is the person that can be a figure head for this campaign i have today been in touch with The Jeremy Vine Show on BBc Radio 2 as he has a regular feature on the show with Terry Walton who has an allotment in the Rhonda valley.
Any ideas please as i am running dry
du
I suppose national Newspapers the gardening papers and magazines.
I have written to Jon Cruddas. The Recorder is informed the residents of that area are yet not informed or organised. Perhaps a letter to the minister for environment.
The Local stewards meet tomorrow night.
Green party MEP and the green party .
That should be a start.
James G
Have now sent an email to BBC radio London to see if we can get some air time and support from this as well.
du
How about Romford radio or Essex radio.
James G
Go on then Mr F my fingers are getting a little worn out with all these email messages
du
Written to Essex Radio.
du
Written to Garden news.
du
Some one on this thread asked why they were charged £45 for a ten rod plot but they had only 8.75 rods.
Well part of this may be that the paths on one side of each plot are included in the ten rods so you pay for your paths.
Water only cost £2700 this year through out all 25/26 sites but has cost up to £8000 in previous years so divided across the maybe 1000 plots that is up to £8 per year for water per plot.
The association also donated £2200 to St Francis hospital ,another £2 odd per plot. There are other costs involved in up keep so this may explain the cost of a ten rod plot.
