Stowmarket on market day

I've noticed that there have been fewer Saturday stall traders in the Market Square over the past few weeks.

there are more supermarkets now. Sad really. I might pay a visit to the market this coming weekend.

I think it may be to do with fewer people actually go to the market.  6 years ago when I first came to live here market day fairly buzzed with people buying and chatting now I am often the only one there and must admit Saturday morning do not always contain shopping for me either.

Yes I think if you compare prices of for example Grapefruit in the market, they are 60p each whereas in Asda they are 30/35p. Markets are supposed to be cheaper but I have not found that to be so on fruit and veg.The stalls I visit are the bird food stall and the wool stall both excellent , occasionally the flower stall too. There has been a Thursday bag stall too which is brilliant.
I also think the refreshment van is in the wrong place , it would be better where the fruit and veg is , there would be more room and it would bring people in around it , also it would open up the area where they are now, it is too squashed by the bird food stall for people to walk through with the refreshments there too.

Yes it is a shame. I do craft fairs selling gifts etc and gave Stowmarket market a try with my stall for several weeks last year, but although the cost of a pitch is not too expensive I made a loss most weeks. There are just not the people about with money to spare.

The fish from the van in the market is always superb..I would miss that if it stopped coming.

He generally does well. There are usually queues at his van
