Local Telephone & Broadband

I recently transferred  my PC connection over to my wife's Internet Service Provider (ISP).  What should have been a  straight forward procedure, was complicated by my router going down an hour after the transfer. I didn't  know at the time :

  •  if their was an equipment fault in the phone exchange
  • an underground cable fault
  • an internal house wiring fault or faulty filter at the wall box
  • or a faulty router
It seemed strange that both my wife's and my PC's were online for an hour,  then suddenly offline.  To complicate matters further, my wife's router had in the past,  been intermittently dropping out.  So I disconnected the router and re-connected it directly to the test point on the BT master wall box where the line enters the house, then telephoned our ISP technician to monitor our line for 24 hours.  He also asked me if I wished him to arrange a visit from a BT technician because he said my line was noisy --- before I connected to the test point --- and added this could have an affect on the broadband.  I agreed.   The BT tech couldn't find anything wrong.  I was picking his brains on the availability of fiber optics.  He said it has been installed  up the the cabinet on Brandon Road for my neck of the woods.  Anyhow, after 24 hours our ISP Tech reported a stable line with all other extensions disconnected.  I re-connected an extension and asked him to monitor the line for another 24 hours.  I have two more extensions to re-connect so it's a rather drawn out procedure, but I did find out my router was faulty.  This is my third router in as many years.   Has anyone experienced router failure as often?  Does anyone have fiber optic broadband, and if so what was involved with its installation. Is an  f/o cable brought into the house?  Is the old interior master wall box replaced, and for that matter the exterior box as well?  In hind sight I should have put these questions to the BT tech guy, but got engrossed in conversation with him over his gas heating system problems HE was having.

Just one router failure here, caused by a lightening strike a couple of houses away. On opening the router, I found that the tops of 5 surface mount resistors had been blown off.

I live not far from you in Redcastle Road Mike and I have recently had broadband problems. They suspected my router, but when I tried another it worked. In the end they reset my line and I am back to normal.

Had a similar problem in Brandon earlier this year when broadband via TalkTalk was down for a number of days but no problem with the telephone calls, in or out.  I thought it was a router problem and changed it but still no broadband.  TalkTalk confirmed there was no problem with the line.  In desperation I called my daughters father in law who runs his own IT company in Mildenhall and he informed me that great swathes of Norfolk and into Suffolk west of Norwich were down due to damage caused by cable thieves!  How come TalkTalk were unaware of this? Two days later broadband was up and running again though intermittent but is now running like a train.
However, here's a problem with TalkTalk at the moment which someone may have the answer to. I have been trying to remove voicemail from 1571.  I bought a new set of phones over a year ago complete with answer phone system.  Having contacted TalkTalk to disable 1571 I waited and waited and waited but after a month or so, although the item had been removed from my bill 1571 still worked.  I have phoned them numerous times over the last twelve months but still have had no success and all answerphone calls are still on 1571.  The only way I can get the new answer phone to react is by limiting the ring times to two which means that I can never get to the phone before the answer system kicks in.  Not a successful solution!  Can anyone help?

Dave W.  Thanks for your help.  I went on to MY ACCOUNT but found that voicemail was unchecked on my list of boosts.  Best bet, I thought, would be to re-check it and therefore reset my account ot ON.  After two days I was informed "Good News" I was now connected to voicemail.  What's good news about that I don't know!  I then went back to my boosts are deselected it.  A couple of days ago I was informed that I had been removed from voicemail and last evening, finally after a year or two of waiting, emails, phonecalls etc etc voicemail is now inactive. Hooray.  Thanks again

Great news! Hopefully you can have a Merry Christmas now without that infuriating "On/off" dialing tone every time you pick up the phone
