Unwanted phone calls

I had a call from a man who said he was calling from the "Energy Board" and would I answer 4 easy questions. He knew my name.
He first asked which company I got energy from but I said I would not answer that. He then hung up on me.
There is no such Board in Britain and I found that the call came through Egypt.  This is maybe a case of firms bypassing British cold calling regulations.
Do not answer these kind of questions.

Hi, you are right that calls from abroad avoid the cold calling regulations. I have 'calling line identity', I guess most people have, and where it shows the call as 'out of area' it's usually one of these calls and I ignore it. If its genuine from a friend abroad it goes to the answer phone and I butt in and take the call. I get about 5 sales calls a week like this and answer none. They never leave a message.

To stop unwanted telephone sales calls you can register with theTelephone Preference Service by ringing 0845 070 0707,  or on the web www,tpsonline.org.uk  or email:   tps@dma.org.uk.  This should help stop all those calls which are really becoming a nuisance.

Yes Maureen I do know that and agree but these calls are coming from abroad and are not covered by British regulations.

I agree with John S - get yourself a phone where you can see who's calling you. Life is much less stressful if you can decide whether to answer or not. None of these nuisances ever leave a message so it's much the best option.

I have to agree with John if they are from abroad they would not be covered by British regulations. Maureen you need a phone where it shows who is calling as already said by Liz F then, if you see International come up you dont answer it, simple!!

The telephone Preference Service only covers the UK. It has no influence on callers from abroad. The answer is simple. When they call say hello and quietly put the phone down ,not on its cradle, leaving them to talk to themselves at their expense. They soon give up
