Originally, Christmas, started at sunset on 24 December. Hence Christmas Evening (or Christmas Eve). Christmas
would then continue until nightfall on the 25th which started St.
Stephen's Day, (Boxing Day)
To our ancestors therefore, the Twelfth night after
Christmas would have been the evening before 6th January. - ie 5th January. So I suppose that means that we should really take them down just before sunset on the fifth!!
