I don't know why they don't just let them park up in the Garrison Lane car park. Or on Landguard.  They've been doing it for years now, and no-one in authority seems to give a monkey's.  Maybe if they hoiked up around Doreen Savage's house, we'd see more action?

Back to reality - I think it's probably a necessity to provide somewhere, otherwise they'll just keep claiming other public areas and ruining things for the locals.

I presume it's actually going to happen.  And obviously, we will pay for it, through taxes.  Let's be honest, someone has to subsidise the travellers' freedom, don't they?

I think it is neccasary gypsies and travellers have been persecuted for a long while ,but yes the Travellers  have mostly bought it on themselves by not leaving things as they found it . A true Romany gypsie would never leave a mess but the ones i know most have bought houses and settled down

I have a real problem with modern-day Travellers,  They seem to think they have an absolute right to park up wherever they want, leave all their rubbish behind and not accept any responsibilities for their actions.  "We only want a bit of land" they whine ... well, hell yeah ... we'd all like to be GIVEN some land for nothing.  And they expect councils to clear up after them, and yet don't pay any rates or council tax.

I spent some time in the 80s, dealing with "The Convoy" in the West Country - and there never was a bunch of more selfish, greedy, aggressive and violent "hippies".  They would park in someone's drive and then DEMAND "diesel money" to drive away.  I have no time for them, despite being sympathetic to their ideals.

Tim S - I just read this in the local paper.  The article mentioned some names which I suspect belong to our local councillors, but I think it will be a decision from Suffolk Coastal.  Perhaps you will get some more from the local paper's  editor, one Mr Cornwell.  He gets a lot of things wrong, usually dates, so perhaps he has done it again with this article!

Mike Moore, the inspector who held the public inquiry into Suffolk Coastal's core strategy in the autumn, has told Suffolk Coastal to look at providing a travellers' site. The council were supposed to have addressed the issue already but had other priorities, plus I guess they don't really want a traveller site on the peninsula (or anywhere else in the district!). The government will want one so now the council has to spend more of our money analysing the issue, putting together a report and identifying a site.

Gypsies and travellers will always tell you they are from true Romany stock? They also know how to spin a yarn.

i thought gypsies were travellers..like...as in travel and stuff lol..why should htey have any preferential treatment? they abuse the land they get given..and crime goes up in the area where they are camped. they will never earn respect and acceptance if they keep treating everyone rough shod with this attitude that they are owed everything. mostly they are not true romany..but people who have opted out of society..but still expect all the privileges and considerations that go with it..nhs treatment..car tax. schooling..a place to camp on...etc etc..look at dale farm..the struggle trying to remove that lot..it will be the same here..they will take and take..and will not benifit this town in anyway shape way or form.they abuse the law and the people that have to tolerate them living beside them. i think this will be a huge mistake for this to go ahead.

As I understand it, there are travelers (people who live in caravans) and gypsies (or Romanies).  The travelers have made a choice to live a life less ordinary and some of them are right scroungers - as you say, they want all the benefits of a modern society whilst contributing nothing.  I don't want to tar all travelers with the same brush, but they do seem to be a bunch of ne'er do wells and chancers.  The true gypsies, you will rarely see - they are culturally inclined to roam the land and appear to be quite independent and self-sufficient.

yes i agree ..true gypsies have a respect for the earth and for the land and their animals and has been said..self sufficient .but i havent seen much evidence of those kind of people here..these are travellers who dont travel lol and who take and take and give nothing back. all the experiences i have had with them..i.e. at our archery club..have been very negative..weve had our lock ups broken into and the kitchen block and toilets!. not sure what they can do with 3d plastic animals..but hey ho..each to their own lol..it does wear thin tho..we are not funded..we rely on subs donations and volunteer workers to maintain the club.we have very little but still we get targetted.they have their music full blast when there is a shoot on..we have to pay for the wood where we shoot..they dont..and they muck everything up for us..they can be very intimidating with their dogs etc..at one time we had to pass thru their encampment to get to the club..and there were often confrontations..we weremade to feel that we were the intruders..but there was no other entry to the club.we had special keys to the lock on the gate but they had used tools to break the lock..this has happened time and time again..if  travellers are in the area..there will be crime...as sure as night follows day..they do not deserve respect or sympathy.. they use and abuse.

What a shame Melanie can't the police do anything? Or is that a silly question hands tied with human rights I suppose.

guy i knew had a £600 old transit truck stolen by gypseys. the police told him if its under £1500 they wont get involved. the guy  later got several tickets for the transit ranging from untaxed on a Beccles street to  damage to a telegraph pole  and never dared go get the transit back

@ Emma we have got the police involved..numerous times and the forestry people..we have to let them know so they can put a new lock on the gate...not much any one can do for the reason you said..they know they are the ones looting but can so do sod all..:(...the club now has smart water on everything. not sure that will much but we will see.  it doesnt seem fair as we pay rent for the wood..we are only a small club all we have is a few rubber animals and some basic kitchen ware...the gas bottle and the stove got nicked and the generator..which we rely heavily on..its like playing a game of snakes and ladders..just get the club back on track..and is starting to do well then this happens and we are back to sqaure one..too many snakes not enough ladders :(  so im afraid i do not feel very sympathetic to travellers..they are not true gypsies..ive known true gypsies and they respect the land and respect people and are self sufficient and most of all clean..they dont leave a lot of rubbish about or fly tip.. i think it woul dbe a huge mistake if we er to allow a site here..it will be a nitemare...i guarantee it.

It's a real problem Melanie. I know that when they pitched up at Landguard, everyone round here felt nervous - double checking the locks, fixing padlocks on sheds etc.  I count myself lucky that nothing got stolen from round here.
However - they still ended up costing us money.  They were doing "landscape gardening" in the local area, and garden clearance.  This involved bringing truck-fulls of rubbish from around Felixstowe and dumping it in the middle of the field.  When they all buggered off, there was a mountain of rubbish behind, apart from the regular bin-bags, nappies, broken toys, gas bottles, empty lager cans and piles of dog shit.  It took the Council three days to get rid of it - which effectively meant they were spending OUR Council Tax.  So we are indirectly paying the travellers bills ...
