Giving birth in the 40s, 50s and 60s
Hi. I'm looking to speak to anyone who gave birth in Barking and Dagenham or was a midwife in the 40s, 50s and 60s for a feature in the Barking and Dagenham Post.
We have some great pictures from the time and would like to hear people's memories of what it was like having a baby then.
Call Sara on 020 8477 3893 or email sara.odeenisbister@archant.co.uk or post below. Thanks!

The treatment I received in 1965 was barbaric. I was 18 having my first baby and was left on my own not knowing what was happening to me. When my baby was finally born I was not allowed to see it and it was left to my husband to tell my that she had been stillborn. I was then put in a ward with other mothers that had their babies. Three years later I received a letter telling me my baby had been born with hydrocephalis and spina bifida. Thank goodness parents that are in this situation now are treated with compassion.
