Spitting

Can any one please tell me why people spit on the pavement, it is a disgusting dirty and unhygienic habit.

It is a typical Asian thing. I remember when lampposts had signs about fines for spitting in the street.

Thanks for your reply David, but it seems to be rampart across many creeds and cultures. I have seen many Black & White people, even women, spitting.

When I have asked them why they do it they tell me that it is as natural as pissing but I have said to them that we do not piss in the street, after that they get abusive.

And Apple I agree with you.

The people who do this are the same ones who litter & throw their chewing gum on the streets. The only way to curb it is to have a lot of litter wardens giving out instant fines, but that is not going to happen with all the financial cuts we are experiencing.

David M in blaming foreigners again shocker!!
It is disgusting but to lay the blame on Asians is going a bit too far.
Having checked your previous posts it seems it's something you do a lot of the time.

The reason why it has always been frowned upon in this country is that TB was once rife and had been almost eradicated by improved housing and healthcare.

Spitting was considered symptomatic of TB so if you saw someone spitting you would avoid them.

In the early days of public transport in which people were huddled together there were "No Spitting" signs on buses and trains.

Chris S, I am sure that employing litter ( and spitting ) wardens would be a good money earner for local councils.

Let the people that cause the mess pay for it to be cleaned up and put some extra money in to the council coffers and keep down our community charge.

Maybe something to be raised with the new Safer Neighbourhood Board to be established under the new MOPAC reports? They get to assign tasks to those ordered to perform community service?

It's worked in South-East Asia for donkey's years. We've all heard of chewing gum and Singapore before.

As to the question of why they spit....monkey see, monkey do...the old adage of "when in Rome" seems to have fallen by the wayside.

A "for instance":
There's an ancient Chinese belief that an evil spirit dwells in the throat. Chinese on the mainland and in Hong Kong today still believe this. (More modern Chinese don't believe it.) They frequently clear their throats and spit to keep the evil spirit at bay and keep him from strangling them when they swallow.

It seems odd to us, but a lot of our practices seem odd to them.
