Flute suitable for a child

My daughter is keen to learn to play the flute, but as we don't know yet if this is going to be a passing phase we don't want to spend too much money on one! If anyone has one to sell that would be appropriate for an 8 year old to learn on I'd be grateful if you could let me know. Many thanks!

I would try and hire one to start with. We used one we hired through the school and when we realised my daughter was getting on really well, we bought one ( well her grandparents did!). If you are going to buy one, buy the best you can afford. Probably not worth buying a really cheap one. Hope that helps?

Good suggestion by Tracey. I would apply it even more so to the guitar, as some cheap ones are very hard work to play and enough to put anybody off!

For a first instrument, I'd say playability comes way before tone, visual beauty or anything else, though obviously it does need to hold accurate tuning.
