Ethical Discussion

This month we will be enjoying our regular annual tradition of using one of our monthly meetings to spend time discussing amongst ourselves interesting topics, usually involving some ethical or philosophical dilemma, instead of having an external speaker. These sessions are usually well attended and enjoyed. We take ethical issues and questions which people bring along to the meeting, draw them out of a hat and discuss amongst ourselves with everyone having a chance to speak. However, if you wish to just come along and listen to the discussion that is fine; all are welcome!

Last year we found that we answered the immediate questions quite quickly but the issues that were raised in the process of answering were often subject to lots more thought and discussion. To give a flavour, some of the starting points in our meeting in 2015 included:

A couple of political questions. Is it ethical for parties to renege on some promises to gain greater long term influence? Should one vote for the party, the party leader or the local candidate?
A couple of questions about vegetarianism and what choices individuals and restaurants can/should make.
Should all Humanists be feminists?
Can you be a pagan atheist?
Should Humanists share a platform with religious people on issues like abortion if they agree?
Should you go along with religious observance (e.g. bowing head at prayers) when with those people?

Please do come along if you are interested in joining in or listening. If you have any ideas that you think might be good for discussion please do bring them along.
