Chit Chat !

Exmouth beach FAB today for dog walkers, really low. Yesterday Jacobs Ladder beach great too.

Did you know that Connaught Gardens cafe is now open 10am until 5pm every day ? Just outside on the benches looking out across Jacobs Ladder beach on a sunny day is a real sun trap. My favourite place to sit and take in life ....

I love jacobs ladder. Sometimes I have breakfast up the top at the Clock Tower and look through their windows at the lovely sea views. The mushrooms on toast there is fabulous, golden buttered mushrooms on nice thick granary toast. Coffee also not bad but I find the best coffee at Selly's, Libra Court.

Noooooo ........... the best coffee is Costa  ............... we really do need a Starbucks to round off the competition.
PennyPincher
Def not a Starbucks as they don't pay taxes in UK as claim they work here under a loss. They'll be claiming charity status next!! #taxevasion

Shame Sidmouth could not keep Costa out like Totnes,,,they ruin it for the small independent coffee house s . If one wants Costa and Starbucks , one can go to Exmouth, Exeter , or some other town that looks like any other town,, need to globalisation out !

Costa is very welcome in Sidmouth ........... one of the few places that serve decent coffee that is open early in the morning for the cup of "heart starter" ............... the small independent coffee houses are all shut up until the coaches and visitors start arriving so no good for locals. Don't want to go to Exmouth when I can get a decent coffee in Sidmouth at Costa ............... just wish Starbucks would come here to give a bit more choice. I think this parochial attitude is very selfish.

I wasn't happy at first about a Costa but my view has changed, they have kept the main integrity of the building and do provide early starts, staff are cheerful and seem to remain open quite late if I need a coffee outside normal trading hours. I don't see why Costa can't sit easily besides the independant coffe shops in Sidmouth who might prefer a shorter trading hours lifestyle. However I would also rather have had a Starbucks as out of the two I prefer Starbucks coffee. I never thought TIAII and I would have anyhing in common so I need a sit down as I feel quite faint.

Stay sitting Robin F ............. that way you won't trip over me because I have totally collapsed on the floor after reading your post! I'm on a roll ............... so I have to ask ...... did you (sn)object to the Costas planning application when it was submitted?
Robin F inactive
TIAII  I didn't object because not wanting a national chain in Sidmouth would not have be considered valid grounds for an objection. PennyPincher, darn you are quite right about Starbucks tax avoidance,  Costa it is then.

Noooooo .................. tax avoidance my rear end ............ its creative accounting. Starbucks are very welcome here.

Ok so Costa opens at 7.30 (I think) but when we drive through town at 8.30am the Chattery is already open and we open at 9 so I do resent the above remark. Thank you Robin for appreciating that as independents (who want to give a personal service) we can't sustain the 12 hour days.  Also really appreciate your comment on our coffee, it means so much to us when when get such positive feedback.

Have to agree on the Clock Tower being an awesome setting!

I should have said "Most of the small independents ............"  that would have been more factual. If it is a service you are providing why can't you open for longer? Surely that is part and parcel of a better service?

Well, some of us also have a family to raise, TIAII; I expect Katrina's not different and has commitments before opening shop.

I'm sure Katrina has a life to live and I would certainly not expect an independant coffee shop to be open early or later than usual trading hours.

Its simple, we dont want to open longer hours, its all about having a  work / life balance.  You make it sound like we are part-timers, we work 6 days a week with a minimum of 8 hours a day, thats a minimum of a 48 hour week.

Your definition of a 'better service' obviously differs from ours.  Our definition of better service is about being served by people that enjoy what they do, that are passionate about their products. Its about consistancy, remembering peoples names and how they like their coffee.

Thank you to Robin,  its always a pleasure to serve people that respect, support and most importantly appreciate local independent traders.

All down to preferences I suppose ..................... I have taken coffee at yours and simply prefer Costas. I really like Starbucks coffee and would welcome them to this town with regular patronage.
Diane L
I bet Katrina is devastated you wont be returning to hers!!!
Have to say that I personally don't like most high street coffee chains, but if your preference  is for overated, naff, expensive coffee then you are better off at Costa's or Starbucks!

i think you get a far better coffee at a standard cafe myself and a reasonable price to
Robin F inactive
Bill T I have to agree, the likes of Selly's coffee and The Clock Tower are hard to beat.

A hint of a Starbucks or similar I would take to the streets in protest. Homogenised Sidmouth, larvely dahlin..., it would make me weep

If I'm in that part of town I certainly would visit Katrina Ls premises again ................. trouble is it is too far off my beaten track normally ........ but never say never. Put yer coat on and get yer hanky ready F B ............

I am not a nimby sort, a business person myself and don't want to see empty shops of course I don't but there has to come a point where we have to stand up and 'do a Totnes'
Henry H inactive
? what is "do a totnes"?
most people who want a coffee are those standing in the high street and go "I want a coffee, where is the nearest decent place... costas - so they go there to get something with a funny name that is apparently coffee. It will be interesting to see how Graze does - will he be opening in the evening? didn't the last owners of Brophys upset a lot of the yummy mummy group by telling them they couldn't breast feed in his shop?
Barnacle Bill
Whaaat? Now that is bad business practice - he should have allowed them to 'flop 'em out' then charged them corkage!
Barnacle Bill
A "do a Totnes" Henry - think it refers to Costa Coffee backing down from opening an outlet in Totnes after some locals did quite a bit of objecting - the company claiming that they respected the wishes of the towns' populace etc etc.

Seems as though there are a lot of objectionable people now living in the South West. (lol)
