Eating Out Recommendations

Hi

I thought I'd start a topic for people to recommend pubs, cafes, resturants.  I'm new here so it would really help to know where to go (and where to aviod).
So where would you suggest to head to for the best roast, nicest cakes and best fish and chips? Why are they so good?
Thanks, Alison

Best fish & chips: the fish & chip shop at Aldeburgh. Buy at shop and eat on the beach. Sublime and unbeatable.

Best pub/restaurant: The Fox at Bulmer (just outside Sudbury). Great for quality of food, service and value.

Spring Tide is great for trying new things without spending a fortune. Carvery at Browston Hall is great value, especially at lunch time. I also enjoy Captain manby's Carvery as you get braised onions as one of the veg. - and I love onions!

I agree with Nibbles on Bevan Street East as a cafe it is the cleanest I have ever seen and he does a good range of food at good prices.

For a coffee and snack in Lowestoft you an't beat Heils for value. They are at the top of London Rd Notrh just past Beales. Also a bakers so do fantastic cakes - their cup cakes are delicious! You can get a filled roll, cake & hot drink & see change from £5. They also so light meals - jacket potatoes, omelette, bean on toast etc. Staff friendly, always plenty of them and the tables are cleared quickly. A bit tight for buggies & wheel chairs but there is room if they are not too busy. I would avoid lunch times if you have them as they get packed.
I agree with Roger about Capt Manby's in Gorleston (just before hospital). Love the onions. Their carvery is £5.50 (was last time I went) and it is a full roast. You can also have free top ups of soft drinks like coke. Famiy friendly.

Fish N Chips at Aldeburgh is great, be prepared to stand in line for maybe an hour or more or you could try Swans at Banby, book early, My favourite roast is at Kingfishers at Burgh Castle, great choice of meats along with other meals if anyone does not want a roast.  If you want to try a new experience try Black Rock at Potters, £35.00 a head, but great food and plenty of it.

There's a new cafe at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft. It's clean, friendly and very good value for light lunches, cakes and a light meal before a show. It's a great place to meet friends and there is now a walkway straight through into the theatre. You can get a loyalty card when you buy coffee which entitles you to a free cup after each 5 you buy and if you are a Friend of the Theatre you get a 10% discount as well.

If you don't have transport, you don't need to go all the way to Aldeburgh for decent fish and chips-try The Trawlerman in Kirkley. There is a nice little cafe there, the staff are very friendly and prices very reasonable. The batter is light and tasty too.
The Cafe Grande at the Kirkley Centre serves good coffee and cakes.
The Oddfellows in Pakefield serves a variety of beers and has very good food and friendly staff.

Capt Manby's. Onion's are oki. Turkey is fair. Their Scotish's beef. Huh. I think it must have walked from Scotland and dropped dead in their kitchen. Sorry,I dont rate the place. Sunday Dinner, Try the Ocean Room carvery, Dinner and Pud £20.90. Bowston Hall carvery. Veg's are iffy, once had mashed spuds there with eyes, gravy good, Sweets are Great !!!   Trawlerman, Cod? and chips, never seen cod shaped like a hand with the thumb sticking down. Would really like to find a place that does real cod and the Proud British Chips, instead of these soggy imitations.

For curry, Labone in Oulton Broad (the old station at OB North) - good food and very friendly service. Mangoes in Bevan Street for lunch. Isn`t breakfast something you eat at home? Cakes in Kirkley Centre Cafe on London Road South - very clean, quiet cafe and lovely home made cakes. Is any one else fed up about Holland and Barrett closing the cafe upstairs which had been there for years since it was Beaumonts? I was very disappointed the H&B closed what was always a very popular lunch/coffee stop.

This thread is a good idea.

I don't eat out much, but was treated to a good carvery meal at the Wherry Hotel recently, so will reccommend them.

There were 3 of us & we all had drinks, starter, main course, desert & coffee.  The bill came to about £54, so that works out about £18 each.

The food was good, & you could have as much carvery as you wanted, the plates were massive too.

There is plenty of free car parking, & there's a lovely view from the dining room across Lake Lothing.

the Hatfield Hotel Lowestoft do a 2 course carvery for £5 between (I think, but check) 6.00 and 8.00 pm. REALLY good value and excellent food
