Male Lives in Mitcham address verified

Like so many other Streetlifers, I have been really sorry at the move over to Nextdoor as per my posts..... BUT I was talking this morning to my sister in East London who is using N/D and has put my mind to rest over lots of things that I was unhappy ... [ more ]
So.....how do you access other areas then? My area is so small whereas on Streetlife it covered Mitcham, Streatham Vale, Streatham Park, amongst others. Neighbourhood seems to consist of a few people who I can talk to any day as they live nearby.....
It appears that Streetlife is merging into Nextdoor. I hope this will not remove the excellent sense of community and local feeling of SL.
During the course of my employment, I drive between Wandsworth, Lambeth and Lewisham on a daily basis. I have done this for many years, but am now finding it very stressful due to the 'harassment' I receive from other drivers when I adhere to the 20 ... [ more ]
As the average speed of London traffic is about 8mph, I can see no reason why the whole of London should not be subject to a speed limit of 20mph. That way everyone would know where they stand and enforcement would be easier. Accidents and deaths ... [ more ]
People totally missing the point I made. The AVERAGE speed is already 8mph. Just that nutters speed when on side streets but then hit the jams. OVERALL 20mph speed limit would not make that much difference. And no, it should not just be near schools. ... [ more ]
People moaning that slower speeds mean longer commutes should just get up earlier. Your saving time is very unimportant compared to saving lives through not speeding.
At the end of the day, if I can't get up earlier, I'd rather be five minutes late for work than several years early for my own funeral (or worse someone elses.....)
In my last job I'd already done two and a half hours work by 9.30!!!
I realised that, I was just saying my working day was 7 to 7. Or my working night was 7 to 7. Plus half an hour each way on the bus. So you can see I didn't like traffic jams much either.
I just couldn't be bothered driving was why I used the bus. Let the poor old bus driver have all the aggro of cyclists and jams, I could read the newspaper.....!
Everybody has the option of using a bus to get to and from work. Or are you a travelling salesman?!
It doesn't take much research to realise that the slower the speed the less serious the injury.....SLOW DOWN!
And still the speed deniers won't accept that speed kills, or at least seriously injured.
Not how I'm reading these comments. Seems everybody thinks 20mph is too slow for them.
As Ian says, budget cuts have decimated the old Traffic Police. But we could install more cameras, they can be used to issue speeding fines. Plus they could monitor other criminal activities as well. Big Brother? Who cares, I've got nothing to hide, ... [ more ]
Adding more strength to my argument. A London wide 20mph limit would be cheaper on signs at least. You wouldn't need any, just a TMO.
No it isn't too slow. It's four or five times the average walking speed, so why must your rushing around possibly cost someone else their life?
Speeding is bad all around London. Motorists care nothing for anybody but how quick they can get where they want to go. Selfish and inconsiderate once they get behind the steering wheel of their weapon of choice.
No, we might as well haven a blanket 20mph limit, that way more people survive, and you motorists still get there.....eventually
No, should be able to continue to do 20mph.
Shahid, anybody can look up the stats that prove, as they have for years, that a pedestrian is more likely to survive being hit at 20mph than faster. And why do you need stats to prove basic commonsense anyway?
Its not a case of refuting anything that speeding motorists say or believe, it's just a matter of repeating the long established fact that speed kills.
Sometimes even when you travel at 31mph in a 30 zone.....
So "decent roads" are those that allow you to drive at a higher speed? Typical petrolhead/polluter
Stella, what's confusing about slowing down, why is everything today about speed and "now"
Speed deniers. Perhaps rather than impose speed limits we should just ban cars completely and only allow professional drivers on our roads in vehicles that have their maximum speed restricted. To 20mph in cities.
So you're saying that slowing down makes drivers lives difficult? How selfish, always put the driver first and * everybody else.
Speed kills. Fact. End of argument. Happy Christmas everybody.
Shahid, it is not up to me to prove anything, the figures are in the public domain for anyone who cares about road safety to access, why don't you try it? As for driving, no I gave up my licence recently after 50 years of driving without one accident, ... [ more ]
Actually I gave up smoking about ten years ago....! And my opinion on motorists, especially some commenting on here has always been the same. Unfortunately, lots of innocent pedestrians and other motorists suffer because of their "me me" attitude.
Yeah Ian N, that's one driver who needs to be permanently removed from the road. Hope everyone recovers.
30 in a 20 zone is also speeding......
Lots of people on here sound like the Jim Steinman / Meatloaf song. "I wasn't built for comfort, I was built for speed"...!
Evidence is easy, install more cameras
Tyranny to make people drive carefully? Oh please!
Jo P, it's nice to see some sensible comments on here regarding speeding motorists.
Your comments do not appear to support your protestations however
Totally wrong again mate. I am all for 20 mph zones everywhere, unlike you, as less speed equals more people alive. You just want consultations and restrictions near schools. I want speeds reduced everywhere for everyone's benefit, not for a few where ... [ more ]
Mike, you have to realise that with the average car journey being probably less than ten miles, that could add 250 seconds to a driver's journey. That's over six whole minutes! God forbid they have to lose over five minutes of their lives to maybe ... [ more ]
My point is that I agree that a few seconds is not worth a life. But it seems I'm in a minority. Hopefully the 20 mph zones will be increased to slow traffic down.
Maria S: I did not mention six miles. The average journey is allegedly ten miles. The extra time by slowing down is apparently 25 seconds per mile. So 10 x 25 would add 250 seconds to an average ten mile journey. Or it did when I went to school (mind ... [ more ]
Don't remember saying that 250 seconds was a whole six minutes, but if I did it must have been a senior moment. But whatever, minutes are not worth someone's life, so slow down.
Now you're having one; I'm MTO not a car certificate of fitness!!!
They don't work like that now, they know when you slow down and work out your average speed. If it's too high you get the points. Tough!
Well you can always try Peter's suggestion and see if you get anything in the post can't you......
Deaths are lower than ever before? Really?
So keep slowing down traffic and the figures should get even better then. Although I doubt the two poor people who got hit in London yesterday (one dead so far) would be interested in these statistics.....
I applaud what you say Jo P, but unfortunately I am not optimistic that this will happen in my lifetime. I hope it happens in yours. Since the day mankind first walked upright on two legs we have been systematically destroying the earth in some way, ... [ more ]
Pedestrians cannot be licensed, every Briton is born with the right to walk the Queens Highway! Cyclists are a different matter however.....like the one I just saw cycle past my house, no lights, no hands and texting on a mobile. At least he was on ... [ more ]
Nick L: Great idea, and when I was a Police Traffic Warden they often did just that. But now they have no policeman except for policing the Notting Hill Stab Fest......
Well I'd never vote for them although restricting car use/speed/pollution is a very sensible policy, unlike most of their ideas.....
If you want to live safely and your children to grow up, get a 20 mph zone nationwide.....
No, you'll be SAFER if you get hit at 20 mph rather than faster by somebody concentrating on their phone instead of the road.
Best bet is to train drivers to treat the roads with care and respect for other road users, particularly pedestrians, pay attention to the road and not your phone, always watch the traffic and the road and don't exceed the speed limit whatever it ... [ more ]
We're talking speeding cars I thought. Don't even get me started on bikes on pavements, red lights, etc....
Quite right. Outside my house currently there is a line of cars belching toxic fumes whilst stationary. So cars don't even have to drive at 5 mph to kill you. All the more reason to ban non essential traffic, especially cars on the school runs every day.
School runs are not essential, especially when there are hundreds of special school buses. And people driving kids to school ARE the cause of poor traffic flows. People need to take their heads out of their exhausts and look around at the real world. ... [ more ]
No, you're missing the point by driving everywhere when you can use alternatives
Makes you wonder how we became one of the greatest trading nations in the world in an era when nothing travelled faster than about 10 mph and the "pollution" from the vehicles was even good for your roses.....!
Shahid Rafiq: Just seen your comment, surely you're not going to resort to that old chestnut. It was trading as we paid the price the people selling the "goods" demanded at the time. Then we decided it was wrong and abolished trade in certain goods. ... [ more ]

Hello everyone, VisitMyMosque is a national initiative whereby mosques throughout the UK are opening their doors to local communities to show them around, offer them refreshments and answer any questions about Islam in the UK today. Tooting Islamic ... [ more ]
The one in Morden used to be an Express Dairies depot. I went round it years ago when the West Country milk trains used to operate to there. It was a very enlightening experience back in the Sixties.....
Alan L....I'd forgotten the fire, arson wasn't it? I believe they charged some kid(s) for it. Were they ever convicted and sentenced (to a days community service!) does anyone know.....
Judging by the way I see the men dress round my way on Friday, I think a long nightshirt and trainers would be suitable, although as Hannah C says you'll need to remove your shoes. For women I don't know as I thought only men could enter the mosque.....
I don't like wine, or dates, so can I share a pork pie and a pint with someone, preferably a woman?
Just stating facts. I don't like wine or dates so I'd prefer beer.......with the missus down the pub, where we'd both be welcomed together.....
So those hate preachers were really just figments of our imagination then? Like Captain Hook in Peter Pan?
I'm looking around at a fitness tracker for a dog and do't know if its a total waste of money or a really good useful thing? The most popular is the FitBark https://www.fitbark.com/ but here are other ones. Any views on these types of devices?
hi ther i need a bike to get about on so if any as got a bike thay would like to give away please can you let me no thanks
What is the telephone number to ring when your drive way is being blocked? I live in Croydon and I am constantly being blocked in. Can't get any joy from Website
The police will not get involved in simple parking disputes, white lines and drop kerbs are council responsibilities and have been for years. Police enforce Red Routes and serious obstruction. Sorry but blocking your drive isn't that.
Traffic Wardens no longer exist. They are council Parking Enforcement Officers, not Police Traffic Wardens. You hated us so now suck it up motorists!
We need a cleaner and I am learning Spanish, so thought I could combine the two. Any recommendations would be gratefully accepted. Please PM me.
